Email notification of registrations for Word Press blog
-
I have a Word Press blog that is connected to my website. I have not entered a blog post on this Word Press blog since 2011. In the last two months, I have started getting emails saying that people registered for the Word Press blog. I get 30-50 of these per day. I really need them to stop, but I don’t want to delete the Word Press blog. Can you help? How do I stop these notifications from coming in? Can I cancel people from registering? Has the blog been hacked? Barbara Carpenter (email visible only to moderators and staff)

Good Morning –
There are no active sites on this WordPress.com account that you’ve contacted us from.
I have a few more questions as I’ll try to get you pointed in the right direction for help.
When you look at http://tedgalencarpenter.com/ in your browser, is this your website that you see?
That domain is not connected to WordPress.com in any way. If it expired then someone else could have bought it and built a new site with it, and that does not mean you were hacked.
There are 2 versions of WordPress. What we do here at WordPress.com is quite different from a self hosted WordPress site. This guide explains those differences: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
I have a Word Press blog that is connected to my website
Were these 2 separate addresses?

Liz, thanks for your continuing assistance. I had a tech proficient person here a couple days ago who thought if I deleted the WordPress blog from my website, the emails might stop coming. I did that, but the emails are still coming in, probably bot driven from WordPress. The blog was set up many years ago, probably 2010 or earlier. I remember setting up something on the blog to notify me when someone either ‘liked’ or ‘registered’ for the blog. That’s what I think is happening, usually from east european countries. Is there a way to find the old blog at WordPress and change that setting or just delete it? Or cancel the blog? Something has to stop these emails. They’re driving us to distraction. Barbara

Hi Barbara –
I think the problem is a subscription setting on your WordPress (not WordPress.com) account.
Have a look here at the settings page: https://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_General_Screen
Next to Membership there’s a box that indicates “anyone can register”
I think this is the issue you are having. To adjust this setting you’ll need to sign in to your WordPress account and make the change under setting.

I think you are right, Liz. I looked at your link and it makes sense. However, I can’t get into WordPress.org anymore. I figured out how to login, I put in the ID and password that I have on record, but it keeps telling me the password is wrong. I tried to set a new password, but it’s not sending me an email to let me do it. Got any idea how I can get in to remove the check mark? Barbara

I don’t have any access to help you with that account. Have you posted at wordpress.org/support/ already?

I think that’s how I got connected to you, Liz. I have just tried to reset the password again, and I can only think that the system lost my email address or is sending an email to a wrong email address. I have used the same email address since the beginning. Do you know any way to contact a live person at WordPress.org?

You know, Liz, I’m about ready to trash this blog. I went to the screen in your email, and I have to be able to login to ask why it won’t send me an email allowing me to change my password. Unfortunately, I can’t sign in so I’m in a Catch 22. Any other ideas? Barbara

Hi Barbara –
I was out for a few days, my apologies about the delay in reply. This may help you: https://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password

Liz, Thank you so very much! This gives me something with which to work. I have some tech friends who will understand these directions and be able to get me in. Unfortunately, I have enough knowledge to be dangerous. lol I appreciate you staying with me through this process. I’ll let you know when I break in. Barbara
