Email notifications for blog update
-
Hello
I see 2 types of emails announcing new blog posts.
One is where a small excerpt is provided and a link to continue to read the rest.
e.g. from http://gwenithwhitford.com/2016/02/07/dominicas-calypso-fever-its-contagious/.
The other type is where the entire post is smbedded in the email. e.g. from
http://jahnavinewsom.com/?author=2I wonder if #1 uses some plugin (subscribe2) to to send the entire post by email. It will be helpful if wordpress can do this without a plugin so that a novice user can do it.
Thanks

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted blogs like https://cycletourforever.wordpress.com/
The site you linked to above is not hosted by wordpress.COM.
What is the URL starting with http:// of your own site, please?

Your theme is designed to display front page excerpts only https://eightiesdemo.wordpress.com/
Know that themes that provide automatic post excerpts on the front page followed by read more links like yours does can sometimes be made to display full post through use of the excerpt box below the editor. However, no HTML will be active in the posts if you do what follows.
If you use a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts then here’s the workaround to compel the display of full posts on the front page. Edit the posts and look below the editor box to locate the excerpt module. You can control the length of the excerpt displayed on the front page and the exact excerpt that is displayed there.
You compose your whole post first and before you publish it you switch to the HTML (Text) editor, copy the code for what you wish to appear, paste it into the Excerpt box below the editor, and publish the post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/excerpts/#creating-excerpts
If you want to create your own excerpt for each post then that will have to be done on every post. -
Please let me add this. What is sent out in the emails is exactly what is in the RSS Feed for posts. https://ondominica.wordpress.com/feed/
I suggest that you switch to using a different theme. This is a list of only SOME active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410 Don’t choose one of them.
re: switching themes
Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.
Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click the “activate” or the “preview” link, or type in the name of the theme you want to use when it appears.
The theme customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/ provides a preview function for exactly that purpose ie. so you can view what a theme will appear like prior to changing one.

My question is about the content of the email sent to subscribers who wish to be updated of new posts. Some blogs send the entire posts and some only a small excerpt. I am trying to help another blogger accomplish sending excerpts instead of full posts and cannot find any obvious means to do so from the WP-Admin->Settings->Email PostChanges screen.

I clearly understood you. Have you made sure that your RSS Feed is set to full text and not to summary here ? Dashboard > Settings > Reading?
For each article in a feed, show
Full text
