Email notifications in RTL [right to left – Hebrew, Arabic, etc.]
-
I use a Twenty Twelve theme in Hebrew. Email notifications from my blog display well in most platforms, but in some they get garbled – i.e., certain characteres, like English letters, ” and some more, mix up the text. This also happens with the subject line where there’s a break.
Things get especially ugly when I forward an email notification to a friend who uses Gmail. This is a pity because we do want to spread the word about our blogs.
For the tech fellows – I uploaded two files to the Media secion in my blog named Screenshots3_Email_Notifications.pdf and Screenshots3_Email_Notifications.doc. The files show screenshots of the same email notification in different combinations of platforms.
Thanks much for your help. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Thank you for sharing those screenshots of the issue. If your email client doesn’t display the HTML email, the formatting for the email notifications may not work properly. That’s not something WordPress.com can control — you’ll need to check each email client to make sure HTML emails (sometimes called “rich text” emails) are enabled and working properly there.
For example, I see you have some trouble with how Outlook 2010 displays and sends those emails. You can learn more about the options for HTML emails in Outlook 2010 here:

Hello,
Thanks for your response. I have now double-checked with the IT person who helped me with this issue. He confirmed that his Gmail was set to HTML. Moreover, the email notification text was garbled in his Outlook 2013, too. In all the combinations with Outlook and OWA, I was using HTML. So there seems to be a more fundamental issue here, which I leave to you to figure out.

Hi there,
When you forwarded the emails to Gmail, that was from Outlook 2010, correct? You’ll need to resolve the issues in Outlook 2010 first to make sure Outlook is sending the email correctly — otherwise anyone who receives a forwarded email from there may end up with formatting issues.
Did the steps on that page I linked help resolve the issue in Outlook 2010, or are you still having trouble there?

Hi,
Yes, I forwarded from Outlook 2010 to Gmail.
For me, forwarding from my Outlook 2010 is not so much of an issue [I don’t really do this]. I am more concerned about people using 2010 who may receive email notifications from WP and see them in a garbled format. If this depends only on their personal settings then there’s little we can do about it. If, however, there is some systemic trick that you can pull at WP that would help 2010/2013 users that would be lovely.
Thanks.

Hi there,
This is dependent on your local settings within Outlook — WordPress.com sends a formatted email and the email client will need to interpret that format correctly or else the email may not be displayed with the correct formatting.

Hi there,
I understand. It’s just that the issue of garbled Hebrew messages happens [to me] only in these WP email notifications, ignoring messages that originate from sources that use plain text, as you noted. So I thought you might be interested in finding a general fix.
best regards.
