Email notifications no longer in HTML?

  • Unknown's avatar

Email notifications used to be in HTML, but as of a couple of days ago they’re in plain text. What happened?
I swear I did not change any settings in my wordpress account or in any of my blogs.
This problem appears both in my own blogs and in blogs to which I subscribe.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Fil, Did one of your followers mention they saw your email notification in plain text, or were you the only person who has noticed this so far?

Let’s check on your incoming WordPress.com email settings. Please click on the following link:

    https://wordpress.com/settings/notifications/

Please confirm that your Email Delivery Format is HTML, rather than plain text. Let me know what you find. Thanks very much!

I just checked and my Email Delivery Format is HTML.
…perhaps I should be a little more precise: the emails I get are formatted (therefore probably in HTML) to an extent (bold, italics, etc) but links are not clickable and the overall formatting seems very… primitive. No images are included either (whereas I would at least get the WP logo image).

I double checked my gmail settings too, and nothing has changed there either.

    Sorry, I should have added:
I am the only one who appears to have this problem. No one else has mentioned this to, about my blogs or any of the blogs I subscribe to.

Fil, Could you do an experiment for me and follow a new WordPress.com blog via email?

    I picked one at random:

    http://emorfes.com/

Follow via the email subscription link in the right-hand sidebar.

I am also going to subscribe via email.

Set your notifications to Instant Delivery, and choose HTML format. I will do the same.

Once you receive the new notification, take a screenshot of the email, and I can compare it to what I receive. You can simply upload the screenshot to your Media Library, like any other image, and I’ll be able to access it from there. Just let me know when the image is uploaded so I can take a look.

The page at the following link has some helpful tips for taking screenshots:

    Take a Screenshot

One last question: in what email client are you receiving your WordPress.com notifications?

Thanks much! We’ll get this figured out.

Ok. I just subscribed by email to emorfes.
I checked the settings and they seem correct (instant email for posts and HTML format).
I get the emails in my gmail account ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) – we have Google Apps for Higher Ed. But I note that we’ve been using this for at least a year now, and everything was fine till a couple of weeks ago.

I’ll upload a screenshot as soon as I get a notification.
    Thanks!

Perfect! I will make certain I get the notification via gmail as well. Let’s hope the blogger posts soon and we can get to the bottom of this issue.

I’m a little concerned that it might be something on gmail, but I just checked again, and I don’t see any changes to my gmail settings either. If I do find anything in gmail, I’ll be sure to let you know.

  • Unknown's avatar

Definitely be in touch if you find anything in gmail’s settings, or the ryerson.ca incoming mail settings.

  • Unknown's avatar

Hm. There’s a thought. I’m on good terms with our postmaster. I’ll send him a note and see if maybe Ryerson has messed something up. Will advise if I get anything significant.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Excellent! Let me know.

I’ve just uploaded a screenshot of the message body to my media library. The filename is “WPemail.png.”
I also uploaded another image, WPnotifications.png, that is a screen grab of the notifications settings page. Just in case I’m doing something supernaturally stupid.

Fil, Thank you for these screenshots. I also received two email notifications from the same site. One in gmail, one in another client — they both arrived in html.

Your notification settings look correct to me, so I think you’ll have to look into your email client:

    1. Check out this link and see if it gives you any guidance:

    http://www.mailermailer.com/support/knowledgebase/sending/kb/495

    2. If the link above doesn’t shed any light on the issue, I need two more screenshots:

    • One of your gmail client screen with the emorfes.com/ email open, and the arrow next to “to me” clicked. This is right below “via bounces.wp.com”
    • And one of your gmail client screen with the emorfes.com/ email open, with the down arrow clicked that sits next to your Reply button.

    3. Let me know if ryerson.ca made any recent changes to incoming mail settings.

    4. Have you received any other emails from other senders that have arrived in HTML?

I’ll keep an eye out for your response. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    The link didn’t help. Sorry.
I’ve uploaded the 2 screenshots into my Media: WPemailToMe.png and WPemailDownArrow.png.

I’ve also got a request in to our postmaster here at Ryerson to see if anything weird has happened recently on our end.

    Fil,

Thank you very much for these screenshots. Please keep them in your Media Library until we find a solution for you.

Are you able to receive non-WordPress.com HTML emails in your Ryerson account?

If you open up your email client in Chrome and Safari, do you still see your email in plain text?

Has Ryerson given you any response about changes on their end?

    Thanks again!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’ll keep the images available.
    Answers to your questions:
    1. Yes, I can receive full HTML emails via my Ryerson account.
    2. Chrome & Safari both exhibit the same “bug.” I don’t have FF installed.
    3. I just heard from Ryerson. They’ve found that it may well be something particular to our Ryerson/Gapps/Gmail settings because, apparently, a notification sent to a “consumer” gmail account comes out looking right, but the same announcement sent to Ryerson Gapps doesn’t. They continue to inquire.

Will keep you updated, but it’s starting to look like it’s more a google thing than a WP thing.

Fil, Please let me know what comes of Ryerson’s investigation into the issue. This has been quite a mystery.

  • Unknown's avatar

I certainly will. Right now, though, they’re all still scratching their heads. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

We all have that in common :)

Robyn, I’ve received some info from our people here at Ryerson. It sounds like maybe they’ve tracked it down. Anyways, here’s what they say:

This bug has been traced to an issue in PHPMailer. Messages are being illegally encoded which is causing processing to happen at this end that corrupts the message (further).

This bug has been traced to an issue in PHPMailer. Messages are being illegally encoded which is causing processing to happen at this end that corrupts the message (further).
The bug has been fixed in the main PHPMailer code as of three days ago (see: https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/issues/219).
The issue has also been flagged for attention by WordPress (see: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/rfc-violating-content-transfer-encoding-header), so I do anticipate a fix will be incoming as soon as the core WordPress folk get around to replacing their code.
