Email notifications when post/page is updated?

Hello. I am wondering if followers of a blog get an email notification everytime a post/page is updated? Or will they only get notifications for NEW posts published?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Followers only get updates when a new post is published, not when existing posts and pages are updated. Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

I have a question about this… I keep reading that subscribers are not notified when we update posts but what about when you publish a post as private and then (much) later change it to public?

I did this on another blog I own to posts which had been privately published years ago, and my subscribers received email notifications when their status was changed – even though 1.) the posts were back-dated (I mean like 3 years old) and 2.) they were technically already published, so in other words were not “new” posts but just updated from private to public. In fact all I did was uncheck the little box next to private in my dashboard – I didn’t even open the editor in any of the posts I updated. I didn’t need to since I was only changing that one setting and they were already published posts.

I would really prefer not to lose subscribers because of an overload in email notifications, but I have read we cannot control those notifications. Is there anything we can do then to prevent flooding subscribers inboxes for instances like the one I described?

    Thanks!

When you make a post Public it’s the same as Publishing it, and all email subscribers are notified. If you’re not doing this for more than one post a day, you won’t lose subscribers.

I know that, thank you. I appreciate your response. I hate to be a nit-picker, but I have to be right now because I really actually need a solution to this problem… so you’re saying the answer to my question is if a WP blog owner changes a post from private to public – even a post from 3 years ago, then whoever is subscribed to follow their blog will receive a notification (depending on the subscribers own notification settings).

But If that is true, that actually doesn’t support the response from above…

    She said,

“Followers only get updates when a new post is published, not when existing posts and pages are updated.”

If I privately publish a post in 2010 and update it in 2014 so it is no longer private – I am updating a previously published post – I am not publishing a new post… and I cannot imagine anyone would want their subscribers to receive a notification about it. If that were the case, I would just change the date first, or copy the post to make it current. The editor does not call it a “private draft” it says it is “privately published

Regardless, my point is there are now two different responses to this question. Which reply is the definitive answer? Because if as I described above sends notifications to my subscribers, then actually the answer to the original question on this board is,

Followers get updates when a new post is published and when old posts are updated.

Can someone then clarify – please… I really appreciate it.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hi humblepancake, I’m sorry for the confusion and for the oversight in my original answer. I should have said that followers are only notified when a post is first published publicly. That includes when a private post is changed to public (as that’s the first time that particular post is published publicly).

If you’d like to change private posts to public without notifying your followers, you can change your entire site to private first. Once you’re done making the posts public, you can switch the site back to public without notifying followers.
