Email obfuscation

So I’m concerned about adding a contact email address to a website. For GDPR reasons I don’t want to use a contact form. Therefore I’d like to obfuscate the address, using ROT13 or similar. I know I can get a plugin to do this for WordPress.org. But what about wordpress.com?

Does wordpress.com obfuscate email addresses on websites? And if so on what price plans?

If that’s not available, is there any way to obfuscate an email address? I don’t think I can access the php files to add some javascript (certainly not with a personal plan). Do I have any other options? I’m thinking it might have to be .org

  • Hi there,

The only way to use an email address on a WordPress.com site without typing the naked address is to hide it behind a mailto link. Programatically obfuscating it like you describe above is not possible on WordPress.com.

I’m curious why you think using a contact form will cause any problems related to GDPR. The only information a contact form collects from someone that submits it is exactly the same information that’s collected (aside from optional fields you include in the form) when someone comments on your site: Their IP address and email.

If they email you directly you still obtain their email address, and the IP address is collected in order to provide our spam protection service, as explained in our Privacy Notice:

    Hi Kokkieh

Thanks for the quick reply! I was looking at this again today. The reason I’d thought I might run into GDPR issues was that last year the ICO online test automatically said that you had to register with them if you ‘processed personal data electronically’. I went through the test again today (not having looked at it since) and said ‘yes’ to that question and was told I was still exempt – so I think a contact form might work for me.

  • Perfect. Let us know if you need any help getting that started. Cheers!
