Email publicly displayed

Hi there. I noticed today when using a site called pipl to search for my email address appearing online that it appeared publicly associated to a gravatar account. When I click the link, it sends me to my blog. In the blog settings, it says that my email address is not displayed publicly. I’m wondering how pipl could find the personal email and show it associated with the blog. I don’t want this to be the case. Can anyone tell me how I can rectify the problem? I’d prefer to email/contact a support person directly to send a screenshot showing the email address if at all possible. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Gravatar works by associating your email address with a Gravatar image. It’s possible to find the email address by looking up the URL of the image, even though the email address is not publicly displayed.

If it wasn’t possible to do this it wouldn’t work to log into services using Gravatar. But what that site has done is to use this feature for something it wasn’t intended for.

We have no way of preventing a site from doing this, but if you set your profile to Hidden they shouldn’t be able to access it. You can hide your profile from this page:

  • Just to be clear, your email address does not appear anywhere on your Gravatar account. Someone searching for your username won’t be able to see the email address.

But it’s possible to find the profile if you have the email address already.
