email subscribers – how much text they see

  • Unknown's avatar

I’d like to set it so my email subscribers see only partial text of my posts and have to click through to the site to see the rest. I apologize for asking this simple question, but I don’t remember where I can change this setting and I can’t find it.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can set your RSS Feed to summary. The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.

Also note what follows please. If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the ext does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of only SOME active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

So if I set my RSS feed to summary, will the emails just be summaries, and the receiver can click through to my site to read the rest? I thought emails and RSS feeds were different things, maybe not? I don’t care about putting only excerpts on the front page of the blog, I just want email subscribers to click through to my site.

    Yes. That’s correct.

Sorry to attach this new question, but I’ve just published an incomplete version of my blog post. It’s now been updated, but how do I send a new link to all my email subscribers? Because they received the incomplete version? And has anyone else published accidentally since the new format came about?

Why can I no longer post blog posts appropriately on Facebook? I've asked two forums (WP and FB) and no answer. The correct images do not show up, nor does the post page.

I figured out the FB problem. Sometimes I can’t use the shortlink, I always use the permalink now.

I noticed that all of my older posts are now in one long huge paragraph – all the paragraph breaks are gone.

    Why is this?

Do I need to go back and put all the paragraph breaks back in?

It is not possible to resend posts to your subscribers unless you do that manually yourself.

For copying and pasting from Microsoft WORD.

If you are copying and pasting from a word processing document like Microsoft WORD note that the pasts as WORD button was removed months ago. If you use the Paste as plain text button then a special cleanup process will run to remove any special formatting and HTML tags that may otherwise change your text.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

Whether or not you are copying and pasting go to > Dashboard > Settings > Writing and enable this setting:
    Formatting
__ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/advanced-html/

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

    Timethief –

Thanks a ton for this lesson. I don’t write in MSW, but I did not know about blog editors and have been treating it like a word processor. Many thanks for this invaluable information.

It is sometimes a struggle to make enough time to learn these things, so help from a supportive community like this is so great.
