  I want people to sign up for email notification when I’ve made a new post, but the email gives them the message, so they don’t visit the site. Is there a way for the email to just say there is a new message, and make them go to the blog to read it?

  No I’m sorry that’s not possible. What I do is set my RSS feeds here > Settings > Reading to “Summary”. This serves two purposes. It stopped the blog scrapers who were stealing my posts seconds after they were published. It allows my subscribers to read a “teaser” and click in to read the full post if they are interested in the subject matter.
