email subscription problem
-
We are experiencing consistent problems with the email subscription process. Many people that want to subscribe submit their email, receive the confirmation email with the embedded link and cannot active the link. They click on the link and nothing happens. The copy/cut/paste option exists but we want to know if there is a way to troubleshoot the click option as it is the easiest way to confirm the subscription. Does anyone know why the link doesn’t always work? Is there something we can do to make it work for everyone?

I don’t know the answer to your question. But I can tell you that there have been at least 5 reported problems from people signing up from both personal and work emails. We are a 3rd party helping set up the blog and are getting these reports 2nd hand. I can tell you that we have checked all our email programs including: outlook, entourage, yahoo and gmail and have had no problems.

I’m basing my suggestion of Staff’s query above (see Hanni’s question). You could ask the readers having problems what they are using to read the email. That would help Staff narrow down where the problem is so they can duplicate it and then “fix” it.

OK, I’ve found out that some of the problems reported are from Outlook. Is there anything specific about how Outlook interfaces with the email subscription link? Anything we can do?

I have a friend who is having the same problem. One example is through webmail access, so it’s not unique to Outlook or Outlook Express. The error message said it couldn’t activate the person, but after 8 or 9 attempts it did. Any ideas?

I do not know if this article dating back to 2006 will be helpful when it comes to solving this issue or not but in the hope that it will contain something useful I will post the link. WordPress Versus Outlook: A Step Forward

Thanks for the link to the article although when I read through everything it looks like the problem has been corrected and their solution is obsolete. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem, invited the person, email is send. After clicking the invitation nothing happens.

@lafondasantafe You mentioned that the copy/cut/paste option exists… does that mean that the same users who are having trouble are able to get it to work by copying and pasting the confirmation link instead of clicking on it?

I’m using internet explorer 7. With another browser the invitation works correctly (Safari), so I think it is a browser problem.

designsimply I believe that the users that have problems with the click are able to copy/cut/paste although my client states that the copy/paste option is cumbersome and that people aren’t using it and as a result not signing up for the blog subscription.
luddo You may be right…I have no way of finding out what browser these subscribers are using. We tried it on every system we have here which includes IE8 and FireFox2.0.0.8 and didn’t have any problems with the click.

@lafondasantafe
I hope this helps you. Firefox is currently at version 3.6. Here’s a link to a site for testing cross browser compatibility http://browsershots.org -
