Email subscription widget says I have 393 followers; Site stats say I have 34?

  I installed the “Follow Blog: Follow Blog Via Email” widget to the sidebar of my site last night and was surprised to see that the widget displays a total email subscriber count of 393. But my dashboard shows that I only have 35 followers.

  I went to go find the list of the email subscribers by going to My Dashboard>Totals, Followers, & Shares>The little “+Blog” button under Follower count. Then I see I have 34 followers on WordPress and 1 follower on Email only.

  What the heck? Where is that 393 number coming from?

  This is likely to be coming from adding up your direct WordPress followers and your ‘publicize’ followers. If you’ve linked up Facebook and Twitter it will be adding on the number of people who follow you there as well. So I’m guessing that you have 358 follower on Facebook/Twitter :)
