Email Subscriptions
-
What the subscriber receives when a post is emailed to them is horrible. I am so embarrassed that they get my posts in that format–the featured image (!!) is cut out, and there is no style whatsoever. WordPress should really figure this feature out–so many people subscribe via email, and it doesn’t inspire people to stick around. My featured image is usually as important as the title. Meanwhile, the avatar picture is at the top, and who needs to see that on every post?
Of course, if you click on the link in my Instagram profile to my site while on a phone, it’s gorgeous. The fact that there is such a discrepancy between these types of transmission is a little maddening. Maybe I’m doing something wrong–is there a way to show a part of the post and have a link so someone could click through to the site? That way, it would also fix the problem of emailers not showing up on stats.
Many thanks for any thoughts on this subject!

Hi @juliasforza, the main issue is that different email providers show emails in really different ways. For the free subscription notifications, we opt to keep the display pretty simple.
If you’d rather, though, you’d be welcome to pick a service that specifically specializes in newsletters, and have your readers subscribe to that. There are a few options here:
https://wordpress.com/support/subscriptions-and-newsletters/I’ll also pass along a request to add a featured image to the email, if there is a featured image.

Hi @supernovia, thanks so much for your response. I totally understand that the way emails look is dependent upon the provider. However, it seems like a lot could be remedied if the emailed subscriptions were just sent a paragraph with a link, instead of the whole post.
I really do appreciate you forwarding my question regarding featured images. If it were added I think that would really help things.
Again, thank you so much for your quick and measured reply. I do appreciate it!

Have you considered sending just a summary? Go here:
https://wordpress.com/settings/writing/Select your site if needed. Then try the “Limit feed to excerpt only” option.

I think that’s what I am looking for! That is what I was doing wrong! I was looking for just this kind of option. I am going to try that out. Many thanks for this suggestion.
With thanks, Julia
