Email Text Field

I’ve got a form on one of my pages that includes an Email text field marked as required. I recently received a feedback without any data in the email field. Puzzled, I tried using the form myself, and found that if I enter a simple line of text like “asdf” instead of text formatted like an email address like “(email visible only to moderators and staff)”, the notification I receive has no data for the Email field whatsoever.

Here’s what I have for code:

    [contact-form] [contact-field label="Name" type="name" required="true" /] [contact-field label="Email" type="email" required="true" /] {other fields here} [/contact-form]

Any idea why this might be? Is this a known issue?

Apologies if this is a dup question, I couldn’t find a similar post in the search.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Visitors can type anything into the name and email boxes, so it is easy to fake an identity. If a logged-in WordPress.com user sends you a message, the email will tell you that it was sent by a verified user and you can trust the name and email. As with anything online, know that anonymity is both a curse and a blessing.

According to the above, it appears that it would be possible for non-logged in WordPress.com users to type anything in the email field, not necessarily an email address. (Just tested on my own blog, and, yes, it’s possible.)
