Email through FastMail Setup

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m having a problem with the adding email through another provider. You don’t have specific requirements for FastMail. The setup I used was accepted but it’s not working. Is this something to do with TTL? Or perhaps I have something wrong in the setup.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

    I’ve taken a look at your setup and the actual MX configuration is correct. Unfortunately I can’t see how long it’s been since you’ve made the changes so it might be a matter of propagation (unlike domain names, email can actually take several hours before changes are fully active across the Internet).

    I would like to point out that as I searched online for FastMail MX records, I found two variations. I found both what you have entered:

    1-smtp.messagingengine.com.
    2-smtp.messagingengine.com.

    But I also found:

    1.smtp.messagingengine.com.
    2.smtp.messagingengine.com.

    Note the period instead of the dash. It might be worth the time and effort to contact FastMail to make sure of which is correct as if they are wrong, they will not work.

    Let me know if there’s anything else you need!

    Thanks. It’s been 12 hours at this point.

    Here is some more information I have on FastMail when another (in this case WordPress) is still my domain, but FastMail is doing email:

    DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Email) is a standard that allows email receivers to verify the source of an email and that it hasn’t been tampered.

    Where possible, we will sign any email you send with a DKIM key we generate for your domain. For this to work, the DNS for your domain must publish the same DKIM key. If you use our servers for your DNS hosting (recommended), this will be automatic. However if you use an external DNS hoster for your domain, you will need to ensure that you add the DKIM key at your external DNS hoster. The details of the DKIM keys for your domains are below.

    Note that we will only begin signing sent email for a domain when your domain is “Set”, which will occur automatically once we detect that the DKIM records are correctly being published for your domain.

    Hi there,

    OK, all of that makes complete sense and while we do allow you to enter TXT files to your DNS, unfortunately DKIMs are usually much longer than the character limits that our DNS software allows (which is 192 characters). The DKIM is however optional to making your email work. That is just to cut down on spam.

    In regards to making sure that the settings are actually right, you might still want to reach out to FastMail. They can do a lookup of your domain’s MX (mail exchange) records and make sure that they are set correctly.

    Thanks, I’ve sent them a ticket. It may be a while until I hear back from them.

    I’ve got an answer back from FastMail. Not sure if this helps at your end?

    The MX records are still not pointing to us:

    http://intodns.com/rehobothcanada.com

    You need to check this up with your domain host. Contact their support and let them know that you wish to change your MX records to the following:

    * in1-smtp.messagingengine.com. (first, preference=10)
    * in2-smtp.messagingengine.com. (second, preference=20)

    and they should be able to do it for you.

    Hi there,

    Yep, that helped quite a lot! I’ve made the changes that they provided for you, so go ahead and wait a while for propagation and then reach back out to them to see if they’re showing as correct if your email doesn’t start working before then!

    It’s working… thanks :-)
