Email updates for followers of private blog

Is there any way to ensure that followers on a private blog receive emails when there are updates posted on the blog? This works if the blog is not private, but doesn’t seem to work with a private blog.

@willis000 you’ll need to be sure each person is added as a viewer, since we only let people see the site with your explicit permission.
You can add them as viewers at wordpress.com/people .

Yes, but when they are added as viewers, do they receive email updates when a new post is made? This doesn’t seem to happen, even after they click the link on the page to become followers. Does something else need to be changed in the settings so they receive email updates when a new post goes onto the blog?

They will if they are also subscribed and have chosen to be notified by email.
