Emails bounced after adding forwarding address
-
Hi,
Any emails sent to my domain are being bounced with the following error:
554 5.7.1 <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>: Relay access denied
This has started happening after I added an email forwarding address. I have since deleted the forwarding address mapping (for the record, emails to that address worked fine) but I still get the above error for inbound emails.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

Here is a copy of the email reply:
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
(email visible only to moderators and staff)
Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the server for the recipient domain jobinatinnemans.com by smtp-fwd.wordpress.com. [192.0.97.133].The error that the other server returned was:
554 5.7.1 <(email visible only to moderators and staff)>: Relay access denied -
Note that I have not changed any of the DNS records, merely setup then removed an email forwarding address. This is now affecting my business and seems to be a problem on the WordPress side. Please look into this issue as I cannot go another day without email.
Thank you

I had to reinstate the forwarding address so that customers can at least get in touch with me somehow. Now when sending mail to the one *real* email address mail [at] jobinnatinnemans [dot] com, I get the following error:
Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table
What is going on? Please can someone help.

Thanks for that. First time post and didn’t realise I had to add a tag for mods to investigate issues.

Hi @jobinatinnemans , I’m taking a look. For what it’s worth, you can also reach us here:

You bet. I’ve been looking at your account and don’t see anything obvious that would cause this.
– Did the forwarder ever work?
– Were you able to confirm the email address?
– Can you go ahead and add a forwarder for now so we can do some testing?
Thanks in advance :)

I’ve added the forward again to promotions [at] jobinatinnems [dot] com and that works fine.
However the original (real) mail [at] address is still getting bounced.
As I mentioned before, all I have ever done is add or remove a fowarding address and since then this issue has appeared.
-
FYI the forwarder always worked. It was just that after I added it, the single real email address on this domain stopped working for inbound mails.
Note that outbound still works fine.
-
Hi. Is there any progress on this? The issue is still occurring. Using mailtester {dot} com it reports that the mail address does not exist on that domain, although it does (or should do).
FYI I can login to GMail and retrieve my mail from there but nothing new is coming in due to being bounced. I didn’t actually realise this was a Gmail account until now as I set the domain and email up through wordpress.
-
Ah, you’re using a forwarder in addition to a real email address? That actually won’t work; we can use either real email with MX records, or we can create forwarders if you don’t have a regular email account.
You could add another forwarder for the real address, if you’d like, but if you have access to real email, I’d suggest creating an extra account (and possibly a forwarder if needed) there.
-
OK. Fair enough. So how does this get fixed then?
I’m happy to just stay with the real email and add extra accounts if need be and remove the email forwarding.
So did WordPress modify the MX record to setup email forwarding, thereby breaking the original MX record? Is that what you are saying?
Really I’m just looking at what to do to repair the real email, I can do without the forwarded address. Remember that all of this was purchased through WordPress and I have just followed what seemed apparently valid to do.
Many thanks. -
I would try and update the MX records myself but seeing as I never changed them I believe this to be an issue on the WordPress side. It’s been down for nearly three days now and I can’t see that I have done anything wrong (at least, nothing that is advanced or was stopped from doing through the UI).

Out of desperation I have changed the MX records manually to remove the WordPress email forwarding record and added Google MX records. However I had to start a Google Business trial to do this and this is not what I want and will run out in 30 days.
Please let me know what I need to do to get this back to how it was, so that my email works and I am not being charged externally for it.
Thank you.

Adding the MX records back is the correct step to take. It will start working again within an hour or so.
Usually, if you have MX records in place, you’ll see a message like this on your Email tab:
This domain currently has custom mail servers defined in its DNS settings. This means that WordPress.com Email Forwarding is not available for this domain, and that you should manage your email with your email provider.
And then you’ll see your MX records. You would have to remove those records to get the option to add a forwarder. Can you double check under https://wordpress.com/my-domains > Edit > Email to be sure you’re seeing that too?

Thanks for your input but I’m not sure you’re really grasping the problem here so I’ll just outline it again so we’re on the same page. I shouldn’t have to change the MX records and I don’t know if I have set them to what they were before because I had never looked at them before. I do really appreciate your input as I’m worried I will end up having to shell out money to Google just to carry on what I did before.
1. Domain and email were purchased directly through WordPress on October 7th 2011 and all has worked absolutely fine up until now.
2. On Sept 29th I went into the Email Forwarding section of My Sites in word press and added a new address to forward to an external me {dot} com address. This worked and emails to that new address were forwarded correctly.
3. Emails to the original address, setup through WordPress when I setup the domain on 7/10/2011 were now being bounced.
4. I deleted the Email Forward through WordPress to see if this would resolve the issue. It didn’t.
5. In an effort to fix this I signed up for a Google Business App trial. I removed the MX record pointing at WordPress forwarding and added the Google MX records.
6. Now everything works BUT I shouldn’t have had to do this.So from merely adding an email forwarding address through WordPress my main email address was lost and all mail to it was bounced. I see this as very definitely a problem with WordPress.
I followed your suggestion above and do indeed see that message. I have no idea if that was there before because as I say, I have never ever had to touch any of these settings before. Although the email is now working, I consider this issue to still be open as I have no idea if it will be working once the google trial runs out.
Thanks in advance. Sorry if I sound a bit cross but I really can’t see that I have done anything wrong.

I see. What email provider did you use for the real address before? Was it one of these?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/If you can find an old email from before this issue started, that may help.

I’ll try to find out. I don’t recall it being made clear who the domain was bought from. I’ll see if there is an old email which details it. thanks.
