Emails incomplete

  • Unknown's avatar

When someone signs up for my blog, WordPress sends me an email telling me. I then send them the 1st chapter of my book as promised. More and more of the emails that you send me have incomplete email addresses on them – making them worthless. Would you kindly tell me why this is and correct this problem? Thank you very much.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

You should be able to see full email addresses for all of your email subscribers here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&type=email&unit=1

Can you take a look at that link? I’m trying to reproduce the email notification issue.

Thank you so very much! Would you please explain the difference between WordPress followers and email followers on these two lists?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you again for this list – I truly appreciate it – but in looking at it, it does not answer my original question. I wrote “More and more of the emails that you send me have incomplete email addresses on them – making them worthless. Would you kindly tell me why this is and correct this problem?” The numerous incomplete emails that you sent me are not on this list – complete or incomplete — so once again, would you kindly explain why you keep sending me incomplete emails that are worthless to me? And why are they not on this list too? Thank you.

Here is an example of another (!) incomplete email that just came this morning and again isn’t on your list – babealicious36. Numerous people are signing up for my blog and to get the 1st chapter of my book as I promised, and yet I cannot contact them and they are not signed up for my blog. Please tell me – see post above — what’s going on and how this can be corrected. Thank you very much.

Would you please explain the difference between WordPress followers and email followers on these two lists?

WordPress.com followers are users at WordPress.com that subscribe to your blog through the WordPress.com Reader (the first page you see when you visit WordPress.com when logged in).

Their subscriptions are managed through WordPress.com, not through email. So, they can elect to subscribe only through the Reader or to also have posts delivered to their email address. You will not be shown the email address of WordPress.com subscribers, only their username.

You can read a bit more about the difference here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/following/#how-to-follow-blogs

Here is an example of another (!) incomplete email that just came this morning and again isn’t on your list – babealicious36.

This user is at the top of your WordPress.com subscribers here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&unit=1

As I mentioned above, you will not have access to their email address. You will only see the email address of email-only subscribers here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&type=email&unit=1

More and more of the emails that you send me have incomplete email addresses on them – making them worthless. Would you kindly tell me why this is and correct this problem?

I suspect that the emails you’re referring to are notifying you of WordPress.com subscribers, not email subscribers. As a result, the email addresses are not included.

Just to be sure, could you upload a screenshot of one of the emails you’re referring to to your Media Library? Screenshot instructions can be found here:

    Take a Screenshot

Thank you very much for all this information but this still does not answer my original question as to why people like babealicious36 was sent to me as an incomplete email. It is not a “followers” as you’ve explained and you know that it is (now) on the list of emails. So I should have been sent their entire email but wasn’t. Why would you send it to me incomplete– when it’s (obvious) it’s not a follower? Would you kindly answer this question only? This is the information I’m looking for. Please answer this question only. Thank you.

Part two. See part one above. Okay. I made a screenshot following the instructions you sent me but you did not tell me how I send it to you. I see nothing about how to send an attachment. How do I do this please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Part 2; See part 1 above. So I figured out how to take a screenshot following your instructions, thanks but now I don’t know how to send it to you. Your instructions say to use a media button but here, there is no media button. What do I do now please?

  • Unknown's avatar

Never mind. I understand now. When you wrote “here’s the list”, I thought you were referring to the email list. Not the followers. I get it. I understand. Just a suggestion when giving instructions please be very very specific. I still don’t know how to upload a screenshot so, perhaps you could tell me in case I need to in the future. Thank you very much for you help.
I do have another question . You wrote “Their subscriptions are managed through WordPress.com, not through email.” Doesn’t everyone subscribe using my subscription form on my home page. So is the difference is that some choose to not give me their emails while others – do not? Thanks.

I understand now. When you wrote “here’s the list”, I thought you were referring to the email list. Not the followers. I get it.

I apologize for any confusion. Just to be clear, your WordPress.com-only subscribers (the email notification will only contain their username, not email address) can be found here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&unit=1

Email-only subscribers (those that enter an email address in the form) will be shown here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&type=email&unit=1

The email notification sent to you will have their full email address.

I still don’t know how to upload a screenshot so, perhaps you could tell me in case I need to in the future. Thank you very much for you help.

The easiest way to share a screenshot would be to upload it to your Media Library following the steps here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new/

Can you give that a try? Just let me know once it’s in your Media Library, and I’ll go take a look!

You wrote “Their subscriptions are managed through WordPress.com, not through email.” Doesn’t everyone subscribe using my subscription form on my home page. So is the difference is that some choose to not give me their emails while others – do not?

The subscription form will look different depending on whether the user is logged into WordPress.com or not when they view your form. For example, WordPress.com users when logged in will see this:

    http://d.pr/i/1jirk

If they click “Follow”, they will be following your blog in two places:

    1. The WordPress.com Reader, which is explained in detail here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/reader/

    2. Through email if they would like. They can change this setting though and elect to only receive posts through the WordPress.com Reader.

For those subscribers, you will not receive their email address.

For logged-out WordPress.com users and anyone without a WordPress.com account, they will see an email form like this:

    http://d.pr/i/15oG8

They will only receive your posts through email. You will receive their full email address.

Currently, it is not possible to force the form to display an email field to WordPress.com users.

    Does that help to clarify?

I’m sorry but I need all of the instructions in just one email. Doesn’t this only make sense? Expecting me to go back and forth first finding your previous emails and then, once I do, try to figure out what the heck you are telling me to do, has just gotten to be way too much. I’ve been going back and forth with you ever since this morning! I cannot give this any more hours. I’ve already given it way too much of my time. And all I’ve wanted is to be able to send my subscribers the 1st chapter of my book. That’s all. You have sent me a link to see the emails on a present list however would you kindly tell me — in one email — exactly how I can access these emails without having to go back and find your email to find this link? Thank you.

    @sandipgold

I’m not entirely sure what you mean by “Expecting me to go back and forth first finding your previous emails.” All instructions and answers to your questions were listed in my last reply:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/emails-incomplete?replies=12#post-2139496

I have did include links to various pages on your account. Might those be what you’re referring to?

Either way, I’ll answer the questions again here just to be clear.

This seems like the main question – “Would you kindly tell me — in one email — exactly how I can access these emails without having to go back and find your email to find this link?”

You can see all of your email subscribers here:

    https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog=74303512&blog_subscribers&type=email&unit=1

Again, there are two different types of subscribers on your blog:

    1. WordPress.com subscribers (Will not appear on that list. You will not have access to their email address.)

    2. Email subscribers (They will appear on the list I linked above, and you will be able to get their email.)

This means that you will not be able to send the 1st chapter of your book to the WordPress.com subscribers since you will not have their email address.

As an alternative to sending the first chapter of your book through email, we could setup another method that would allow you to send the chapter to everyone as soon as they subscribe to follow your blog.

Here are a list of steps that can solve this issue:

    1. Upload the first chapter of your book to your Media Library. To do that, start on your Dashboard at sandigolddotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin. From that page, click Media then “Add New”. You will need to upload the book chapter as a PDF (probably how you’re sending it to users).

    2. Once you’ve uploaded the PDF, go back to this page:

    https://sandigolddotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php

    3. Click on the item we just uploaded (your first chapter).

    4. You’ll see a pop-up like this:

    http://d.pr/i/11FRK

You want to copy the URL highlighted in yellow in that image.

    5. That URL is how subscribers can get your first copy. Now, to send it to them when they subscribe, click this link:

    https://sandigolddotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php

    6. Scroll down on that page to where it says “Blog follow email text”. This is the text that a reader receives through email when they follow your blog. We’ll just need to modify it a bit to include your chapter.

    7. Customize the text to include this link. For example, you could say the following:

    Hello.

You recently signed up to follow this blog’s posts. This means once you confirm below, you will receive each new post by email.

As promised, here’s a link to the first chapter of my book:

    [link]

To activate, click Confirm Follow. If you believe this is an error, ignore this message and nothing more will happen.

Can you please give those steps a try? If you get stuck anywhere along the way, please specifically state exactly what you’re having trouble with. This will help me to provide support going forward.

  • Unknown's avatar

Wow! Thank you very much! I will do as you suggested. The person who designed my website — when I said this is what I wanted — told me that it was not available through WordPress! Thank you very very much!

I am confused by one thing though. When someone subscribes to my blog they have to give their email address. There is no choice. So how does one become a WordPress.com subscriber? Where would they even find this option? Thank you again for all the help that you’ve given me.

  • Unknown's avatar

Not a problem! Like I said, if you run into any issues with those steps, please let me know.

    To your following question:

When someone subscribes to my blog they have to give their email address. There is no choice. So how does one become a WordPress.com subscriber?

When a logged-in WordPress.com user visits your site, they do not see an email field. They see a subscribe button like the one shown in this screenshot:

    http://d.pr/i/1jirk

Clicking that button subscribes them through WordPress.com, not through email.
