Emails not arriving consistently

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello

I’m sorry to be asking about this again as I thought I had my email setup and MX codes all sorted but a colleague from time-to-time receives an error message when she tries to email me at (email visible only to moderators and staff).

The message is clearly coming from her server but given my issues before with the MX codes I thought I’d better check.

The comments below are what Domain Central told me when I wrote to them. It looks to me like I just have the smtp thing in place but I guess they are saying there are unwanted MX records to remove from somewhere!

Would love some help here. I understand how the MX codes work basically, but I must admit I don’t really understand about whether it’s Domain Central or WordPress who hosts and forwards my emails.

    In appreciation,
    rachael

Kindly go through below given two points:
    1. From the error provided by you, it is clear that
message is generate by ‘Generating server: hst-syd-mx01.anittel.net’. Please contact to sender email service provider for more details.

    2. You need to contact your hosting provider to remove unwanted added multiple MX records.
Kindly find the attachment, I have uploaded.

    Hi Rachel,

I’m more than happy to work with you to get your email working. I took a look at the message that this provider sent, and they appear to be having problems with “smtp284s.cp.domaincentral.com.au.”

The only problem here is that this record is the only MX record which we have on file. If we remove this, then all email will stop.

Could you maybe reach out to your email provider and find out exactly what MX records should be used for their services? Once we have those, I can help you make sure those are the ones which are on file and that we are minimizing any lost emails.

    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you so much.

They have sent through a link to a table with the problems highlighted

    http://www.intodns.com/findingyoga.com.au

    Does that help?

    Hi Rachel,

I saw that link before, which is how I knew that they had a problem with the record which is in place currently. But again, that is the only record which we have on file. If we remove that, you won’t have any MX records and so your email won’t work at all.

I can show you where to go to remove it, but I think that is not the solution you’d want! If they are saying this is not the correct MX record, then we really do need from them what the correct settings are so that we can get things set up appropriately.

    Thanks Happiness Engineer.

This is what I thought but I’ve pressed them a couple of times about it and they keep saying to go back to you. I’ve forwarded your response to them so hopefully this will yield something!

    Hiya Rachael,

I totally understand. As soon as we have the correct information to enter, we will! We just need it from the folks who provide the services is all. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Fair enough. Me too!

I sent Domain Central your response and their reply is below. Maybe this sounds like everything is OK?

Thanks for this. Is there any way I can just do all of the emailing and domain name registration through you guys to save going back and forth between providers? I have a .com.au web address.

    Rachael

    Hello,

    Thank you for writing in.

We have checked and noticed that the domain “findingyoga.com.au” is assigned to “1703476 – Web & Email Forwarding” hosting plan.

For investigation purpose, we have added our test gmail account as a forwarding email for (email visible only to moderators and staff) and have sent a test mail from our hotmail account.
We have successfully received the mail at our gmail account which got forwarded from (email visible only to moderators and staff).
The forwarding for the email account (email visible only to moderators and staff) is working fine. Kindly check and confirm the same at your end.

However, as per whois the domain findingyoga.com.au is now correctly pointing towards the MX records smtp284s.cp.domaincentral.com.au.

Please feel free to get back to us if you need any further assistance.

    Regards,
    Zahir S.

    Rachael,
If you are using Domain Central to forward emails to your gmail (or any other email account), we offer the same service, for up to 5 addresses, as documented here. Forwarding we offer, but email hosting we do not.

If you do decide to use our email forwarders instead, you will be able to downgrade your account with Domain Central to a domain registration only.

You will want to keep your name servers with us, but you can then delete the MX record discussed previously, and add an email forwarder:

    1. Navigate to the Dashboard>Store>My Domains screen.
    2. Click Edit Domain to the right of the domain in question.
    3. From the Edit DNS tab, delete the MX record. Save Changes.
    4. From the email tab, configure an email forwarder. Add New Email Forwarder.

You will want to give it a few hours to propagate.

You will not be able to test the forwarder by sending an email from the same address that receives the email, as this type of routing is suspicious and will be treated as such (aka sending an email, hitting WordPress servers, which send the email right back).

If you need me to send a test email, let me know.

Lastly, you will still want to pay Domain Central for the registration of the domain, but if you set it up this way, you won’t be using any of their other services. We don’t currently accept incoming transfers so there is no way to transfer the registration itself to WordPress.com.

Let me know if you have trouble,

Thanks SpencerWBerry. Could I just check I’ve understood correctly?

    – Domain Central holds the registration of my domain name and WordPress hosts the website that the domain name points to
    – I won’t be able to let WordPress hold the registration of my domain name
    – Domain Central hosts my email and forwards it via WordPress to my gmail account

The last point is the one I must admit I am still confused about. When I have email issues should I be contacting WordPress or Domain Central.

Eg I’ve just set up a Buy Now PayPal Button on my WordPress site and the confirmation email isn’t arriving at my Finding Yoga email address but goes to my gmail account just fine. Do I need to check in with Domain Central about that or is it likely to be something at the WordPress end?

    Muchas gracias!
    Rachael

    Hello again! Let’s clarify…

Domain Central holds the registration of my domain name and WordPress hosts the website that the domain name points to

This is correct. Your domain points to our name servers, which directs traffic to your site at WordPress.com.

I won’t be able to let WordPress hold the registration of my domain name

Correct. Currently, only domain names originally purchased at WordPress.com can be registered with WordPress.com. We aren’t able to take incoming transfers.

Domain Central hosts my email and forwards it via WordPress to my gmail account

Emails uses MX records (Mail Exchange records). Because your domain is using our name servers, we hold your DNS records, including your MX record/s.

However, as per whois the domain findingyoga.com.au is now correctly pointing towards the MX records smtp284s.cp.domaincentral.com.au.

Right now you have one MX record, which points to smtp284s.cp.domaincentral.com.au. So an email sent to @findingyoga.com.au briefly hits our name servers where it is sent to Domain Central’s email server.

We have checked and noticed that the domain “findingyoga.com.au” is assigned to “1703476 – Web & Email Forwarding” hosting plan.

Domain Central then forwards that email to you per your hosting/forwarding set up.

If you want to continue to use Domain Central’s email forwarding, you should be set to go.

Eg I’ve just set up a Buy Now PayPal Button on my WordPress site and the confirmation email isn’t arriving at my Finding Yoga email address but goes to my gmail account just fine.

All emails end up in your gmail account. If you aren’t getting anything delivered that is addresses to (email visible only to moderators and staff), that is a problem to talk to Domain Central about. If you are simply getting all emails in your gmail, that is expected.

Click here for an example – an email sent to a forwarder, but delivered to my personal gmail account.

You can see that it looks like a normal email in gmail, except when I look at the details, I can see the address it was actually addressed to. This also means I could set up a filter for those emails if I want to sort them or treat them differently.

The last thing that I wanted to mention is WordPress.com does offer 5 email forwarders, as documented here. If you wanted to use this service instead of Domain Central, you could just delete the MX record from the Dashboard>Store>My Domains>Edit Domain>DNS screen, and then add the forwarders per the documentation.

    Hope that helps!
