Embed a picture in a comment

Can a picture be embedded in a comment?
I followed http://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/embeds/ and the youtube video worked in a comment. When I embed the URL for a Shutterfly picture in a comment, it does not appear in the comment.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. This is probably because Shutterfly uses Flash which doesn’t work on WordPress.com. I found another thread which mentions embedding it with the gigya shortcode instead, but I’ve no idea if that will work with comments. See: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/shutterfly?replies=7

Thank you kokkieh for the reply.
I find it odd that a youtube video and a Twitter post can be embedded in a comment but an image cannot. Can anyone shed light on why WordPress.com would preclude images from being included in comments while allowing videos and twitters. I am not concerned with spam as every comment must be approved.

There would be those comments which would include huge image files which could break your theme.
You as the administrator of your site can include images and you’d maintain control of the size of the images uploaded to your site.
Comments can include links to pictures hosted elsewhere online as well.

@kokkieh
The gigya code has worked, but it can be confusing for most novices. Also note that it is not officially supported on this platform so it’s one of those things which could be taken away. Better alternatives are for the blog admin to insert the images, or for commenters to use links to their pictures. -
Hope you don’t mind me butting in. I asked a question yesterday which is related, as at least some images do seem to have auto-embedded in comments.

@1tess
I didn’t know that, thanks. That’s the only reference I could find to using Shutterfly images. This also explains why there’s no support doc on the gigya shortcode. I’ve been wondering about that.@thedixieflatline666
I can’t recall the support docs mentioning this specifically, but I know it is possible to embed an image uploaded to your own media library in a comment using html (I’ve done it). Whether a link would work the same I can’t tell you as I haven’t tried it. -
No, I believe that the file must be in the media library of the blog administrator. I think it might apply to an editor as well. Not sure about authors.

The image which embedded first (and is still embedded) in my comments isn’t in my media library, and was linked by a commenter. I’m the only editor. Oddly, I haven’t managed to replicate the embed with an image which wasn’t in my files, though one randomly found (by google search) picture did embed at first, it stopped doing so after a couple of page-refreshes. Unless it happens again, I’m going to assume it’s just a quirky glitch.

@1tess
I’ve been able to do that. I once embedded a picture in a comment on my wife’s blog by inserting it into a post on my own blog and then copying the html from the text editor into the comment box on her blog. I did not mention it to the OP as in the other thread on Shutterfly timethief mentioned that Shutterfly is flash-based so I assumed it won’t work that way. -
Thank you for the replies!
The image DOES appear in the comment when I use a link that is NOT secure such as the following from thedixieflatline666:
http://i.imgur.com/GimMm3j.jpgor another image I found on the web:

Does anyone know if it is official wordpress policy for http only to be used when embedding links to photos?
-
@e7tech
I can’t find mention of embedding images in comments in the support docs, so I don’t think it’s a case of official policy. It’s probably just the way the software is written.I quickly tested this and it seems pasting a plain link to an image does embed and display the image in a comment. The html is not necessary. Just make sure that when you paste image links you use a http link and not https.
-
Ah! then something I’ve missed while I’ve been away! I tried it on a test blog but used https. Do you think this is a goodie not yet mentioned? I must leave for now: the cats woke me at 3 a.m. and my eyes are blurry!

I searched http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=%22embed+image+link+in+comment%22
but was of little help.I have tried shutterfly, dropbox and GDrive and they all (by default at least) provide links to images with https. I found the following image on a facebook page so perhaps instagram provides links to images with http.
http://instagr.am/p/qPDpBjPMcJ/media/?size=lIs anyone aware of free cloud storage services that provide links to images with http?
It would be nice if WordPress.com support could provide more specifics on embedding image links in comments.

Let me tag this for staff in case your inability to embed images via https is a bug. Please be patient for their reply.
As for your other question: easiest would be to upload the image to your WordPress.com media library and embed it from there. You don’t need large images to embed in comments – 500 pixels wide at the very maximum should be enough – so the file sizes should be small enough to not eat through your storage space.

Thanks kokkieh
I need to allow readers to post images (links to images), with their comments. I can specify limits for the images and I can specify a list of compatible cloud storage providers, if necessary.
-
If it’s for readers to post images then your media library is not an issue as they don’t have access to that. Readers will be able to post images by uploading them to their own media libraries if they’re WordPress users. It should also work for images hosted on Facebook, Picasa Web Albums, Flickr, etc. Even something like snag.gy should work, though I don’t know if they delete it after a certain period of time.
Basically, any cloud hosting service that allows sharing should work, as long as the https issue is resolved.

Thanks again for the replies!
I found that photobucket.com “direct links” work.
kokkieh, I found Facebook uses https and does not work. I have not tried Picasa or Flickr.
thedixieflatline666, I am not sure what you mean by “given a style of max-width:100%” is this done in wordpress? Please forgive me as I am brand new to wordpress.
