Embed an image next to each blog post

  Hi,

  I’m a complete newbie to WordPress, what is the best way to embed a an image next to each of my blog posts. Each post needs a picture next to it for my vision to work.

  1. Do I need to simply choose a theme that allows it?
  2. Do I need a plugin or a widget to do it?

  Any help would be most appreciated
