Embed issue…I have read the FAQ’s and the Forum
-
I just recently started blogging and thought that since one of my favs (gordongartrellradio) is here, I would try it out. Everything was going along well, I was writing and posting and linking to upload sites for readers to get my content. And then I decided, hey I see a lot of blogs that have the handy dandy embedded flash player, I should try that.
So I searched the FAQ’s, found the post with the shortcuts [audio ] for doing this. Sad to say when I enter it into my post along with the proper address for the file I uploaded on MediaFire, when I go to view the post and click play, the player buffers indefinetly. I thought maybe I used the wrong link, so I retraced my steps and tried again with a different link out of the three MediaFire provided me for sharing. Of the three links, two give me the player and one does not. Problem is the two that do give me the player, still buffer indefinetly. I then turned to the forums for an answer. I have searched each one throughly but none I have found address this for me. They really only speak about why can this flash code work not be added or why can’t I add this widget to my blog or an ADMIN admonishing a user for not viewing the FAQ or Forum to begin with. I have several forums I frequent and contribute to, so I understand the call to action of searching first, questions second. I am more concerned with just getting the audio to work.
Am I doing this wrong? Do I have the wrong format? Are the instructions for the FAQ with the demo not clear of have left out a crucial piece of info? Is MediaFire or any other upload site of the type viewed by WP as one of the dreaded “security risks” that I have read about in oh so many other threads? Help here would be greatly appreciated as my blog is about music and not being able to host a file somewhere else and have it playable kind of defeats my purpose. I would hate to think I made an improper choice to use this service to fulfill my budding love of blogging.

Can you give us a link to the file you are trying to play? That way we can check it out.
-
Does MediaFire allow hot linking? That’s the key for using the audio player (as I understand it, at least).
-
I didn’t know there was a difference when it came to a a”hotlink” or a url. That may answwer the question. As far as the links I have been trying to use:
This is the one from MediaFire labled as the sharing URL: http://www.mediafire.com/?ydddzhdkyy2
This the other one labled sharing URL with file name: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ydddzhdkyy2/Evolver – John Legend – Full Album.mp3
If they are not hotlink URL’s then where would I go to upload a file to recieve one?
@ vivianpage: I tried to respond to the comment you left but there was not an option I found to do so from my dashboard. To answer the question, what I have done is to create different pages for different subject matters within the realm of music the blog is about. So Fresh Waterz is the page I would like the readers to start with and then use tabs to find the other content on other pages. As far as it being static Vs. the other option, the other option (can’t remember the name of it now) seemed to cluttered to me. Maybe its supposed to look that was but I have OCD. Bad…to the point I think it should read CDO because then it would be alphabetical like it supposed to be. ;)
Is there another format or setup I could use that would incorporate the pages and posts a little better? Right now I have been creating a post, then copying that post to the proper page. Once I am read to post something different to that page, I remove what was once on the page and create another post with the new info and replace the page with the new post. Hope that wasn’t confusing. In essence I always have a post of what was once on a page with tags in the cloud for those looking for the old post. -
As you write, those are the SHARING urls. For the wp audio player you need the DIRECT url, and Mediafire won’t give you that – it’s mentioned in their FAQ:
“Unfortunately, we are unable to offer direct linking for free accounts because MediaFire’s free service is advertising supported and direct linking completely bypasses our site.”
Try uploading your mp3s in an another host (such as Fileden).
-
Thanks for the info. In the interim between posts, I uploaded to hotlinkfiles.com and used the hotlink I recieved. I now get an error message when viewing the post and trying to play it. The player slides open and the error message is diplayed above it.
I am now uploading to fileden as panaghiotisadam suggested. I will report back if successful or not.

@squaretootz – you respond to my comment on your blog by putting your comment in the comment box just like I did. There’s nothing in your dashboard about that.
I *think* I understand what you are trying to do with your site but I don’t know if others will. It’s not like a normal blog.
As for the mp3s – if you search the forums, I think you’ll find some sites where you can upload the files. You could also get the space upgrade here at wordpress.com and upload your files here. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/10/18/about-the-space-upgrade/

@squarerootz: Fileden is the host I’m using, and I’ve never had any problems. Please paste here the DIRECT url you got from there – or the complete code you tried to use in your post (between backticks), so we can see what went wrong.

(
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1394017/thesoulreservoirsampler2.mp3)Is this what you mean by leaving it in backticks?
-
The address and the Fileden upload are ok: I was able to download your file without problem. But the mp3 is huge and possibly defective (doesn’t register correctly in my itunes). 44.4 MB is impossibly large for a single mp3. How many minutes is it supposed to be? What bit rate did you use for the conversion?
-
It’s a sampler of different songs I put together into one mp3 using AlbumWrap. Thats why the size is large and may have thrown iTunes for a loop. What I was trying to do was use the [audio ] shortcode to have the embed player stream it for my readers. If you downloaded it instead of it playing on the page, that not what I was trying to accomplish.
-
OK, I’ve got the link you provided above on my test blog – http://vjptestblog2.wordpress.com/ – and it is playing just fine, so it should work for you.
One thing I remember from a while back – if you put the link in, you have to break the link in order for it to play. In other words, if when you copy the location, the link is underlined, make sure you highlight it and then click on the broken chain icon (in the visual editor) so that it is no longer a link.
-
Aha…that did it! The whole breaking the link thing. It works now and I’m putting that into the memory banks for future use. Thanks to everyone for the help. vivianpaige, you saved me from finding another host site cause I really like WP. Oh and vivianpaige, I happened to read your blog and I liked it alot. I remember meeting you once while I was stationed in VA during my Navy days, so good to see you again and many thanks.
-
@squarerootz: By the way, re your 10:36 PM post (“if you downloaded it instead of it playing on the page, that not what I was trying to accomplish”):
Of course! It was what I (emphasis on “I”) was trying to accomplish, because you said that Fileden didn’t work for you; I considered that highly unlikely, so first I wanted to check and confirm or exclude that end. (I did, but then, being completely unfamiliar with AlbumWrap, I was misled by what to me was strange mp3 behavior – hence my questions).
And then dear Vivian checked the other end before I was available again. (Not that I would have been clever enough to think of what she did, mind you! I would have asked you to leave the player on your page, and I’d look at the source code of the page to see what was wrong.)
Anyway, glad you sorted it out (and I learned something)!
-
@squarerootz – glad it worked out for you! And good to “see” you again, too!
@panaghiotisadam – I keep a test blog just for this reason. But just curious – would viewing the page source have shown you the problem on the link?
-
-
@Vivian: I’ve got a test blog, too. I had opened it along with my normal one, so that as a beginner I could fumble there without messing up in the normal one, and transfer the results if and when I managed to get what I wanted. Now of course I also use it to test problems and solutions when I try to give answers here.
“Would viewing the page source have shown you the problem on the link?” With a live link instead of plain text in the shortcode? Of course – you’d have the URL twice instead of once (reference AND name), plus the whole thing not functioning, so the source code would definitely be a lot different. Here’s the actual difference in the html editor:
[audio http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1394017/thesoulreservoirsampler2.mp3]
[audio <code><a rel="nofollow ugc" href="http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1394017/thesoulreservoirsampler2.mp3">http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1394017/thesoulreservoirsampler2.mp3</a></code>]What you brilliantly guessed would have never occurred to me, as I always prepare my posts in a text editor, so there’s no possibility of my pasting a live link unless I want to (not to mention that a live link in the editor shows quite clearly, and the shortcode instructions and examples are equally clearly not like that!).
-
@panaghiotisadam – I learned something too and I apologize if I seemed harsh or abrupt with my earlier post. It was not intentional. I was at work reading the responses and has to type quickly before a conference call. Yes, I know shame on me for using my employers resources for my own personal stuff. I will slap my hand for you.
Once again thanks for the work you put in towards getting me a resolution. Oh and AlbumWrap is a nice program. I use it a lot with music especially when making a CD. If you take an album and “wrap” it all the individual files compile into one playable mp3. Then, when burning a CD, since it takes up less space. I have gotten up to ten whole albums on one disc before. It’s kinda like WinZip for mp3’s.
That being said, I had the idea to take some newer music files I find around the web and post them using the short code in an effort to keep readers coming back labeling them after my blog title. Hence thesoulreservoirsampler was born. Now that I have the format (thanks again to Ms. Paige) I am hoping this will drive more traffic for me.

Sorry forgot to give you the link so you don’t go searching all over creation for it: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/8/29/1394017/AlbumWrap%20and%20AlbumWrap%20Extractor%20v1.0.zip
