Embed Problems

  • Unknown's avatar

I am updating some of my old posts and have run into problems. Whereas previously I used the ‘Share’ code from you tube I would like to embed the videos for direct play now that I know more.
I have tried to embed two videos on my post of 29/06/2011 (The 17,000 mph Rubbish Tip) using the ‘Embed’ code from YouTube. Even though I have ‘un-linked’ them it does not work correctly.
Firstly, they appear OK when I press ‘Preview’, but when I ‘Update’ and go to the page all I get is the embed code: <iframe width=”420″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/FbO86-QKia4″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>.
    The second video code is: <iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/EIsubVLN9uE” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>.
I have had this problem before with some videos but eventually got them right. This time however it will not work properly. I have tried everything but to no avail.
Can you please advise me on (a) what I am doing wrong, or (b) tell me the correct method. I have read the related pages but they do not seem to help.
Another problem I have been struggling with is that when I go to edit a post from the webpage many (not all) paragraphs of the post change font to Paragraph and I have to go to ‘Text’ to change it back. I do not know if this is a problem with the edit page or something else. I would however appreciate if you would look into it.
Incidentally, in order to be able to contact you direct I have been forced to go Premium. I used to be able to contact you direct but that is no longer possible. I have had excellent help in the past but I do not find the current system very helpful. Just thought I’d let you know.
To finish, let me say that WordPress is without doubt the best webpage on the web and you guys do a great job. For that I thank you.

  • I’m sorry, but that embed code will not work because we do not allow certain tags on WordPress.com for security reasons, including JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form, and input tags. These restrictions are in place to prevent any disruptions in service due to potentially malicious code.

You can read more about this here:

    Code

We do have a support page for embedding youtube videos on WordPress.com that should tell you how to do what you are trying to do:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Take a look through that page and let me know if you have any further questions. I’ll be happy to help.

Thanks for the help Rootjosh. It worked with the two YouTube videos. If I get any more problems I will let you know.
    Thanks again.
    Roy.

  • Great to hear!

    Happy I could help.

    Hi Rootjosh,
Sorry to bother you again, but I have been updating many of my posts with Youtube videos and everything was going fine. I got about twelve blog entries done but now all of a sudden other pages refuse to accept videos.
When I cut and pasted the code ‘[embed]‘ appeared at each end but now that no longer happens. I tried typing it in but nothing helps and all I get is the code on the blog page.
I cannot imagine what has changed to cause this as I am using exactly the same procedure as before. I have no idea if it is a fault on my blog or what.
I hope you can help me to fix this.
    Many thanks,
    Roy.

  • Can you give me a URL of a post where you are seeing this happen?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Rootjosh,
Sorry to be a bother again.
Below is the URL of one of the posts that I tried adding a video to:

Germany’s Angela Merkel Hits the Nail On the Head!

Incidentally, I just noticed the URL has a spelling mistake in the word ‘Nail’ although the title is correct. If I correct the spelling I get the 404 error. Is this normal?
    Best Regards,
    Roy.

    Hi Rootjosh.
Thanks for the quick reply – WordPress at its best as usual eh!
You have the 404 question correct. I have no idea why the mistake happened or how but as you can see, there are no mistakes in the title.
This is but a secondary concern however, and my main one is embedding the You Tube videos.
I have no clue as to why it suddenly stopped working as I followed exactly the same procedure as with the successful uploads, i.e. the one you outlined in answer to my original question.
    Good luck with these problems.
    Regards,
    Roy.

RE your 6.33 post on the codes Rootjosh, I removed them because they wouldn’t work.
Sorry I forgot to mention that.

    Hi Rootjosh,
I just tried to load videos on my latest blog and as usual, when I went to ‘Preview’ they were fine, but when I uploaded the page all I got was the code again.
I have since removed them otherwise it messes up the page.
The URL for this page is http://floroy1942.wordpress.com/2014/06/13/iraqs-future-in-the-balance/
I would send you copies of the fault but that is impossible on this form.
    Regards,
    Roy.

  • Can you make a draft post in the exact same way that you have been doing recently? Do not publish it, just save it as a draft.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Rootjosh,
I have posted a new draft (Joke Time) in the ‘Posts’ list for my blog. In it I have placed two videos that work fine in ‘Preview’.
    The URL is http://floroy1942.wordpress.com/?p=14853&preview=true
I hope this helps you to solve this exacerbating problem.
    Best of luck, and enjoy.
    Regards,
    Roy.

  • Thank you for the chuckles.

So, the only thing I can see offhand is that there is a slight issue with your embed code. You are using this:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnaEdO8AHVk&w=420&h=315]

    You should be using this:

    [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnaEdO8AHVk&w=420&h=315]

According to the instructions here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Notice that I replaced the space after youtube with an equals sign.

Thanks Rootjosh. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

I tried to update my latest post with a video that has the following URL: <iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/bPUsVmMe1Ho” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
Once again its good in ‘Preview’ but not when I update the page. I get just the code.
I did not see any gaps in the above code.

  • iframe will never work. That tag (along with a few others) are blocked due to security reasons.

You just want to use something like this:

    [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnaEdO8AHVk&w=420&h=315]

As it talks about on the youtube support page:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Let me run you through what I have been doing after following the WordPress instructions you sent me:

On the YouTube page I select a video and with it running I click on ‘SHARE’ (Share this video) this gives me a short code like this: http://youtu.be/bPUsVmMe1Ho.
I paste it into my blog and it worked.
I also clicked on ‘SHARE’ followed by ‘EMBED’ that gave me a code like this: <iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”//www.youtube.com/embed/bPUsVmMe1Ho” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>. This also worked.
Both worked equally satisfactorily until last week. Using the second code at the moment I can get the video to satisfactorily play in ‘Preview’ status, but as soon as I do the update it reverts back to the code only.
I have just tried pasting the video URL into the post but that does nothing. It is strange to me that it worked perfectly for a while and then suddenly stopped.
Sorry to be a pain in the backside but obviously I am not getting something here. I hope you can sort it out.
    Regards,
    Roy.

  • I have just tried pasting the video URL into the post but that does nothing. It is strange to me that it worked perfectly for a while and then suddenly stopped.

When you are pasting the URL (not the “share” URL, just the normal URL from the browser bar) are you pasting it in the “text” editor view or the “visual” editor view?

  • And no worries about being a pain, this is what I’m here for. To straighten this sort of thing out.
