Embed video from Google Drive?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have seen videos explaining how to embed video uploaded to Google Drive onto a wordpress.com blog. It seems like such a simple thing to do and yet, when I try it, I don’t get embedded video, it just shows the link.
    I am having students create blogs using WordPress and want them to post video projects they create onto them. My preference is not to have to depend on a 3rd party hosting site because of filtering systems we have in place. Does anyone know if the ability to embed Google Drive videos has been taken away and whether they will put it back any time soon?
    Thanks!

  • Hi there. I did a quick Google search on this, and all the instructions I can find only apply to self-hosted WordPress.org sites. Instructions to do this do not appear in either the support doc on embedding Google Docs or the support doc on embedding videos, so I don’t think it’s possible on WordPress.com.

    The big problem is all the video embed options actually embed a video player from the specific service. Inserting a video from Google Drive does not include a player to play that video file, and as far as I know the new html5 video tag can’t be used here.

    The only way to use video files directly in WordPress.com is with VideoPress, which is only available to upgraded sites: https://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/

    I’ll tag this for staff to follow up, in case I’m wrong.

  • Hi @CCCT,

    @kokkieH is exactly right,

    You will need to embed the video by using a supported video provider. You can see the supported providers here:

    Working With Video

    Alternately, you can always upload your video to your media playing if you have the Video Press upgrade, which is included with the WordPress.com Premium and WordPress.com Business plans.

    If you have additional questions, please let us know.

    Thanks!
