Embed youtube video via Post By Email

  • Unknown's avatar

It is impossible to embed a YouTube Video via the Post by Email feature. The YouTube link always shows up as a text link instead of embedding the video as it usually would when you paste a link into the WordPress Post Editor. Even trying to use [embed][/embed] tags before and after the link does not work.

Please fix this! I want to be able to post embedded youtube videos to wordpress via email.

P.S. I tried switching my email client (Gmail) to plain text. That didn’t work. I also tried adding newlines after the link. That also didn’t work.

  • Hi @teaganbear, many email providers won’t show video embeds in emails anyway, due to security concerns. We include a link as that will work for the most email providers.

That’s fine it doesn’t need to be embedded in the e-mail, I just need it to embed on the resulting WordPress post. ;) It looks a lot better when there’s a YouTube preview and you can play the video on the page than when there’s just a text link. It’s really annoying to have to log into the Admin CP and change it into an embedded video, and defeats the purpose of using post via e-mail for our blog. :(

Basically, if we can’t post a youtube video to our blog via Post by Email and have it show up on our blog as an embedded preview, we can’t/won’t be using WordPress for our music community anymore. :(

  • We can only support what we’ve listed at https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/ so it’s not possible to include a YouTube video via Post by Email.

Is there any particular reason you’d rather use the very limited Post by Email system, rather than the editor https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/ or apps https://apps.wordpress.com/ ?

Yes, it’s much quicker and easier to post by email instead of using the WordPress Editor which is very slow and cumbersome to use on my 2011 Macbook Pro 13-inch laptop. Most other websites run quicker for me, such as Twitter, YouTube, BandCamp, Gmail, etc.

At this point we’ve just sort of bailed on wordpress blogging and are just posting the songs directly to Twitter and using that as our main timeline/feed.

Since I’m definitely not interested in trying to do these on Mobile (touch screens are the worst IMHO) I will definitely check out the Mac OS X desktop app! Thanks for the tip there staff-blorbo :)

Okay the Mac OS X desktop is also extremely slow unfortunately lol

thanks for your help anyway, cheers :)

  • Hi there,

I did some testing and it appears that oEmbed itself is not supported in Post by Email. oEmbed is what allows us to embed content when you simply paste a link on its own line into a post or page. But if you include the link in an emailed post, it’s being treated like any other URL and getting hyperlinked instead of being embedded.

The PBE feature is powered by the Jetpack plugin, so I’ve opened a bug report with them about this, but this isn’t a widely-used feature, so I can’t make any promises that it will be prioritised for a fix any time soon.

Meanwhile the only way to have the content embed properly is to edit the post and un-link the URL, then update the post.

For future reference, it really helps us if you specify the site you need help with (in this case I’m assuming it’s https://bangersound.wordpress.com/ as it’s the only site in your account with Post by Email active), and if you don’t delete every single example of the problem from the site, meaning there’s no way for us to see the issue in action.

Not to be rude but I didn’t start this discussion to help you guys, I opened it to get help and get answers. Now that I have the answer that “this isn’t possible and it won’t be” that’s all I need to know. WordPress blogging won’t be functional for what we’re doing and that’s fine. I have no obligation to mess up my wordpress site as a test case to prove/show the bugs for you guys. ;)

And we are much more able to provide you with that help if you give us the information we need to troubleshoot the issue.

If you refuse to provide or destroy the information we can use to investigate your issue you make our job harder, and make it less likely that we can give you a solution.
