Embed Youtube videos using yt embed code

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t want to use any shortcut or easy way. I want to use the embed code i get from youtube after I clicked on share -> embed. (Please don’t question why, it’s complicated, basically legal issues.) Is there any way to do this? Inserting the embed code into the text or visual editor doesn’t seem to work.
    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The guide is here http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#embedding-with-a-url and the troubleshooting section is here.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#troubleshooting
If you follow the instructions and Make sure the YouTube link is not hyperlinked then you will succeed.

Thanks for your reply. It doesn’t work though. I read this page before.
The thing is: youtube gives me something like this:
    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/SOMETHING" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
If I insert this into my editor nothing happens. It does not get linked or anything. It is schown as link in the preview, but not inside the editor, so I cannot “unlink” it.

I cannot help with something like this.
I need the exact URL for the exact youtube video.
    Please post it here.

  • Unknown's avatar

Why? Is the solution specific to a single video?
Let’s just use this for demonstration purposes:
    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/fLWacgcUMKw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

No we will not be doing that.

Iframes codes are stripped out by the software here for security reasons. Only some can be posted and you are not doing what I requested.

I repeat that unless or until you provide the actual youtube URL that you want to embed the code for then you are wasting your time posting here.

  • Unknown's avatar

Then please explain to me why you need it. That is all I’m asking for.

If I cannot embed whatever video I want using the youtube embed code I may run into some legal issues due to recent decisions of the ECJ. The ECJ decided, that embedding any video from yt is legal, even if the content is protected by copyright, as long as the original youtube embedding mechanics are used.
Please note that I do not want to distribute any illegal media. I just want to take advantage of the new possibility to embed any video without having to worry if anybody may or may not holding a copyright for that.
It might seem trivial for the US and possibly other countries, but inside Germany (where fair use is non-existent) it is a severe problem.

If I cannot embed any video from youtube using the yt embed mechanics my planned posting becomes reduntant. If my planned posting becomes reduntand I don’t need to embed the video. Do you see what’s the problem here?
Basically it means: If the original yt embed code cannot be used I have these two options:
    -never embedding any videos, or
-embedding them and being legally insecure.

I embed youtubes into my blog posts all the time. I use the shortcode instructions and have no issues at all.

The only application of copyright violation and legal issues arising from it to any youtube videos falls on the person who posts them at youtube. Those who embed them in their blogs are not at fault and that is clear in the law.

Please simply use the instructions for embedding youtubes provided in the relevant support doc at http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Which law? You are aware of the fact, that there is no global law, right? Different Countries mean different laws. In Germany there is a concept called “Störerhaftung”. It means, very simplified, that everyone who enables s.o. to get copyright protected information illegally (e.g. a video on yt which is uploaded without permission) is liable for that as well as the original uploader.
German laws are silly at times, but they are here and I have to obey them. It’s that simple.

I don’t know where you are located at and I don’t care. If you’re located in Germany then you might just be lucky. Otherwise I can’t see why you could be possibly capable of telling me anything about german laws (since I studied that stuff for quite some time). If you don’t want to answer my questions: fine, thanks anyway. Maybe another person wants to help me.

The issue of copyright to which TT refers is in the Terms of Service at YouTube.

She has given you the link for the instructions on embedding YouTube videos. If it doesn’t work for you, and IT DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK whereas the shortcode always works, then you can try searching for the same video on Vimeo and embedding it that way. To embed a Vimeo, you just put the URL of the video on its own line, so Germany, however fussy, has to accept that you haven’t interfered in the embed in any way.

Thank you for your response raincoaster.
Terms of Service do not break national laws, so they are pretty much irrelevant in this case.

Sorry, but I have not found any information at all about embedding yt videos using the exact youtube code, neither on my own research, nor on the link thistimethisspace gave me. There are Instructions about embedding via direct link to the youtube site containing the video and instructions about embedding using the shortcode. Not about the youtube embed code.
How does the shortcode works anyway? Is it using the youtube mechanics?

Unfortunately, t’s a video from a youtube exclusive channel.

What a shame you did not state that right up front.
You wasted your time here because this is an no can do.

If you have to use the exact code from YouTube it hardly matters, does it?

Terms of Service are never irrelevant.

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you please just tell me?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I can’t. I haven’t the foggiest.

    Hi there,

I’m afraid that there is no way for you to embed YouTube videos other than by the methods discussed in our help articles which were mentioned previously.

I can tell you that the embed process merely pulls information directly from YouTube and displays in within the post, just like any other embed. With that said, if you are concerned about the legal implications of not using YouTube’s embed code on your site, then I would recommend that you use a different blogging service, as we cannot be responsible for your site should something be embedded which legally belongs to another individual.

I hope this information helps you in making your decision.

As far as I can tell, the key question here is whether the shortcode can be used to bypass disabled embedding or not. I did a quck test and it seems to does that. I tried to embed a video which says on Youtube -> Share -> Embed: “Embedding is disabled by request.” And embedding it into the preview of a new post was working. Now that is a critical flaw imo. This is why anyone in Germany should not use this method and it probably is a breach of the youtube terms of use as well, but without giving it a closer look, I cannot tell for sure. I would like to beg WordPress to implement a routine, that checks, whether embedding is enabled and prevent the author to embed a video, if embedding is disabled.

I’d like to make this a suggestion to WordPress. Is it fine here or do I need to send it somewhere else? I think we all agree, that one should not be able to embed a video, if the uploader does not allow it, do we?

I hope this information helps you in making your decision.

It did. Thanks a lot to all of you so far.

This is sufficient. I have brought this to the attention of the folks who manage the YouTube embeds, though if you could please provide the example YouTube video which does not allow embeds (but still embeds on WordPress.com using our systems), that would be helpful.

Note that posting it here will not embed it, however if you would like to make sure you can use the “code” tags.

    Thank you in advance.

Basically the first one who did a tutorial on how to disallow embedding I could find was the one with embedding disallowed for his Videos:

    Thank you very much.
