Embedded Audio no longer working: WordPress or Firefox?
-
Within the past week, the embedded audio players on my WordPress blogs have stopped working. All that is displayed is a black bar that is totally unresponsive. There have been no changes to the MP3 files, their URLs. At home and at the office, I’m running Ubuntu 14.x and using Firefox as my browser. The problem IS coincident with my downloading the latest upgrades for Ubuntu and for Firefox. Alas, that at present I have no other browser to test if it’s Firefox or WordPress. Regardless, I figure WordPress folks may appreciate this as a heads up.

Aye, that’s the question, and more to the point, Ubuntu with the latest Foxfire update. I’ll have some time to check on Thursday and get back to you, supernovia.
-
Okay, here’s a partial update.
First, the machine at home is a System76, designed specifically for Ubuntu. The machine at the office is an older HP model. Both are running the latest updates for Ubuntu 14.x and Firefox.
Using this latest update for Firefox and Ubuntu, the embedded audio players DO work on non-Wordpress sites, e.g. http://www.chicagodsa.org/.
I downloaded the Chromium browser for Ubuntu. The embedded audio players do NOT work on the WordPress sites when viewed via Chrome.
This suggests that something in the latest Ubuntu update is messing with WordPress, as prior to updating Ubuntu, it had been working just fine on both machines.
This also suggests that I should be pursuing this with the Ubuntu community. Nevertheless, it is also something you folks at WordPress should be aware of even if it’s not really your responsibility.
be well,

Also, can you clarify whether you’re using Chrome or Chromium?

Chromium. It’s not clear what version but it’s the one currently available via the Ubuntu software center.

Thanks, we had a few folks try Chrome and Firefox in Ubuntu and they did alright. Granted, they’re using 16.x .
Can you pull up the console to see if there are any errors there?

The video on this page can’t be played. Your system has an unsupported version of libavcodecI’m not sure where the ?=1 comes in; that’s not in the HTML of the page:

I wouldn’t worry about the =1 too much. This does seem to be telling, though:
Your system has an unsupported version of libavcodec
I googled that and found some information on various ubuntu sites that may help. I can’t recommend one site over another, but gist is that you probably need to install an updated version of that codec. I hope that helps!

Not really, supernovia :)
But I agree: libavcodec is a prime suspect. If I have the story correct, this is part of what is called “restricted distribution” software. Not that it’s unavailable but there are intellectual property issues that generally require the user to jump through an additional hoop before being able to use it.
I’m pretty sure I have the latest that’s available through the Ubuntu Software Center so I’ll have to do some additional noodling about to see what else is available, though Ubuntu updates seem to be coming rather frequently lately. If something works, I’ll let you know.
