Embedded Excel spreadsheets are failing
-
I have a number of embedded Excel charts and named spreadsheet ranges in my blog. Some of them are complex, some are simple, but until yesterday all of them were working. Now none are working. Some of the spreadsheets and blog entries haven’t changed in years. They were created with either Excel 2010 or Excel 2013 (desktop apps).
In all cases, instead of the desired chart or table, I get the following error: “Couldn’t Open the Workbook. We’re sorry, we couldn’t open your workbook. It’s possibly corrupt or using a file format that’s not supported”.
I can open the spreadsheets normally online so the error is misleading. However if I try to create a new embed code for a spreadsheet using Microsoft’s online tools, I get the same error. So I’m pretty sure this is a Microsoft problem. Microsoft support hasn’t been very helpful so far. Note this isn’t just a browser caching problem.
Reporting this here to see if anyone’s having the same problem and if anyone has a solution. Meanwhile I’ll keep hammering on it.

It’ work fine, for me. -
Interesting. What browser are you using? I’ve tried ie, chrome, firefox in windows 7 and 8 and ubuntu. Cleared cache, rebooted, multiple machines, etc.
Thanks for the feedback!

I can also see them in Win7Pro in Chrome 40.
Are these Excel sheets uploaded to your WPcom site or embedded on onedrive?
There is a similar thread running here (Excel embeds fail to display-particularly on MS8.1 in IE), but in that thread the OP is linking from onedrive: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/link-to-onedrive-does-not-display?replies=22#post-2303048

The spreadsheets live on Onedrive so in that sense it looks like a similar problem to the other thread, but it looks like the OP is getting a different error (security vs. my corruption error). A good reference though, I’ll look at it in more detail tonight. Thanks!

This appears to be an intermittent problem, and regional. It’s working for me now (in Idaho) but not from servers running in LA and New York. I wonder if Microsoft is doing some updating or maybe I’m getting load balanced to a bad machine for Excel Services.
