embedded pdf make display larger

I’ve embedded a pdf but the display is too small, requiring too much scrolling for a relatively small document (a calendar). How can I make it display the full document?

  • Hi, have you considered linking to the PDF rather than embedding it, so that it opens in its own tab? That way it’ll have the full window without any menus or side padding or anything.

If that won’t work for you, can you send a link to the affected page so we can take a look and see what options it may have?

I have done that (for users who want to download the PDF calendar), but I wanted to included the full calendar on the site. To get around the issue, I snipped a JPG of the calendar (a spreadsheet formatted into a calendar) from my own computer, uploaded the JPG to WordPress.com, and am displaying the JPG. Not great, but an easy solution.

Because a PDF is a document format, and not an image format, it can be awkward to add it as an embed as you did previously. Adding a JPG of the calendar (along with a download link to the PDF) is just about the best way to “show” the PDF on your site while also making it available in it’s native format. It’s what I would have recommended, but you beat me to it. :)

One thing I did want to point out though is that you could make the image larger than you have it now. The image block has a few different alignment options, including an option to show it wider than normal.

This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to change the size of the block so your image appears larger than it is now.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

That’s great. Thanks for the video. I wanted to do something similar with the document itself, and was able to get it to expand across the page using the alignment section, but was never able to get it to display fully vertically and as a consequence the user had to scroll down viewing only 3-4 lines at a time – very unsatisfactory.

The method you displayed is nice for the JPG; I’ll change that tomorrow.

    Thanks for your assistance!

  • Hi again,

One thing to note, on your current Calendar page, the image is entered within a Columns Block (the image block is in the central column) which will constrain it’s size.

With this in mind I recommend on that page specifically you add your image block outside of the columns block (either above or below) and if you do that then the image size settings in my video will work correctly.

    Hope this helps!
