Embedded SoundCloud won't appear when viewed from mobile. Help?

  • Unknown's avatar

Although everything works fine from my Mac, and I’m assuming it works just as well on a PC, the embedded SoundCloud players I’ve included in my posts do not appear when viewed from mobile. In place of where the player normally appears there is a big blank space, and then my text appears below.

For reference, my site is http://.hitdrip.wordpress.com. Please see if you can repeat the issue on your mobile device.

I’ve tried both the originally provided embed codes, and the wordpress optimized embed codes available when sharing from SoundCloud.com so I don’t believe the code is the issue. I do theorize that it may be theme related, or perhaps because I’m using the free version of wordpress.

Additionally, I do not have this issue when viewing other sites hosted through wordpress. For example, Hypetrak.com easily displays embedded players and allows mobile viewers to activate the player and listen. I don’t understand why I’m having this issue.

There are a few other questions on this forum that mimic mine, but they’ve gone unanswered. I hope that mine will be answered by a capable admin; this seems to be an easily fixable issue and I’m hoping I’m simply missing something here.

Thank you for that timethief. I appreciate it. It already appears that I’ve subscribed, but I’ll be keeping an eye on this post regardless.

    Best.

I can see see the error on my mobile device as well. Looks like SoundCloud is loading the Flash version of the player instead of the HTML5 version.

Normally SoundCloud attempts to load the HTML5 version first, and then if it fails, will load the Flash version — then you get what you get. Most mobile browsers do not support Flash, so that’s why you and I are seeing the error.

The issue isn’t specific to your theme, or the fact that you have a free site, as I tested your URL on a test site (running a different theme) and found the same issue.

So this seems like some kind of error with what we expect from SoundCloud on mobile. I do apologize that I don’t have a workaround to fix this immediately, but I am reporting this to our development team and will let you know here once I have more information.

Thank you very much for reporting the issue!

Taking a closer look, I’m actually thinking the issue may be that you’re sharing a playlist, not a single track. It’s possible SoundCloud’s API cannot support a playlist embed using HTML5, only flash, and that’s why it appears correctly on desktop but not on mobile.

I’ll still report this to our developer team, but as a workaround I might recommend you use the SoundCloud shortcode with only single tracks for better results at the moment.

    Alex,

Thank you for your detailed response. I appreciate that you’re passing the bug onward to the development team as I’m sure a fix for this could benefit a lot of people.

You mentioned that you believe the issue is that I’ve embedded a playlist as opposed to an individual track. However, I do not believe this to be the issue. As it stands, I’ve been able to browse other websites through Safari on my iPhone and have been able to see playlists of the same sort that I’ve embedded on others’ web pages. Additionally, they’ve been functional. Not to discredit your thought process of course, I just figured I’d play Devil’s advocate with anecdotal experience.

For now, I’ll probably edit my posts to include one or two singular tracks, and then provide a hyperlink to the full set as a work around.

Please let me know of any developments.

    Best,

    John Reeves
