Embedded YouTube videos

Hi
There is a section on our website where we post videos we have saved onto our YouTube channel. These are playing on a laptop or desktop computer but when I try to play on my phone it tells me that there is a recurring problem with our site. This is not just an issue with my phone. I have had reports of the links not working from parents / public. Any ideas what is causing this and how I can fix this?WP.com: Yes

Hi there!
Do the videos work if you start from your site and visit them directly on YouTube, on your phone?
It could be possible that your phone’s browser (and the browsers of computers/devices of other people) are blocking cross-site cookies and tracking. Most browsers nowadays have settings which are enabled by default, which prevent cookies from tracking you from one domain (site address) to another. It’s possible that these types of settings are hindering the videos from YouTube from working directly on your site.
What type of phone and phone browser are you using? The term used tends to vary between browsers; for example Safari refers to it as “prevent cross-site tracking”, while in Chrome it’s just “do not track”, and in Firefox it’s usually “enhanced tracking protection”.

I am using an iPhone 12. I have tried accessing these on other staff members’ phones – Apple and Android – and the same issue occurs on each one I’ve tried. The videos I am talking about are recordings of our school assemblies. They are around 20 minutes in length. Shorter videos which we have embedded from YouTube are playing fine. I am wondering if it is something to do with the length of the video and the time it is taking to load? This is a reasonably recent issue. I can’t say exactly how long this has been happening for but several months ago I know I was able to view videos from my phone to check that they were working.

Hi there,
You are referring to this page, yes? https://prospectbankschool.com/assemblies-2020-2021/
I happen to have an iPhone 12 Pro, and I noticed that page really struggles to load for me. I can see it on my desktop however, and what jumps out at me is that is seems like a lot of videos to have on a single page.
YouTube.com is able to display many pages of videos because it is a custom application (or custom developed website, if you visit the version in your browser) but the embeds themselves can be resource intensive and require loading a lot of resources (data.) This can cause issues when viewed on a slow internet connection, or on a device with a low processing speed, which would include phones since they tend not to have the same processing power as a desktop computer.

Would you consider breaking up this page into several smaller sub-pages? I counted 73 YouTube embeds on that page, and that is a lot if I’m honest. This is an issue that would get worse over time (as your comment indicates) so I can see how it once worked but does not work now as you add more videos over time. If you were to limit yourself to 20 youtube embeds per page, for example, I think it will help.
One way you can check this is to publish a test page on your site (it will not appear in your site menu) and put just a few videos on that test page. They can be your most troublesome videos for example. Do the play for you on this new test page if you check from your phone?

Thank you. I did wonder if it was to do with the number of videos on that page but thought since it was links to videos that this might not be the case. I’ll delete some of the videos or archive them onto a different page. Thanks for your help with this. Best wishes Val
