embedding a google doc–i followed instructions but nothing shows up

Hi…The support documentation for embedding a google doc says to publish the doc, copy the embedding code, and paste it into the blog. I did all that, pasting it into the html editor, clicked update, but nothing shows. Any suggestions? Thanks. P.S., I’m on the free plan.

  • Hi there,

Can you try pasting it into the visual editor instead?

Can you please give me a link to the post or page where you are trying to insert this document? If it’s still a draft post, you can just give me the title so I can take a look. Thanks.

    Hello!

You are so kind to reply so quickly, and I feel really dumb. It does work, after all. See: https://cubanblogs.wordpress.com/cuban-blogosphere-explained/

What happened was…I inserted the code and updated…but didn’t preview or open the page in another tab…and so I only saw the page in edit mode…which only showed the code and not the finished product. Very dumb of me.

By the way, it worked the same whether I pasted into plain or visual editor.

    Thanks, again!

Sorry! I noticed another problem after I embedded the docs. When I click on a link inside an embedded doc that connects to another page in my site, it opens that page inside the frame! Not good, because this excludes the sidebar, widgets, etc.

For example, go here: https://cubanblogs.wordpress.com/about-this-site-and-me/ — in the text of the doc, click the hyperlinked words, “Home page!” Will I have to go in and remove any hyperlinks to my site and replace with some kind of wording that instructs the user to click the tabs at the top of the screen??

    Thank you, again!

  • I’m glad to hear it’s working.

As for the links, that’s not something we can fix. Google docs are embedded as an iframe, which is basically a self-contained window inside a web page. Anything you click inside an iframe will only load in that same frame, unless you specifically code the links in HTML to open outside the iframe.

As Google docs use Rich Text Format rather than HTML, this means you can’t force it with HTML, and I don’t know of any other way to do this.

Looking at your embedded doc, why don’t you simply copy-paste the document text itself into the page? You will probably need to fix up the formatting a little, but that way you won’t have to deal with links opening inside the iframe.

I will do that. You explained a lot in your answer above. I appreciate the help!

  • You’re very welcome :)
