embedding Facebook photos – displays a cluster?

    I’m sure I can’t have been the first to encounter this!

    A little while back, it was made easier to embed Facebook images into WordPress. You can just go into the Facebook album, pick the image you want to display and copy the *link* of the page – no need to get the direct image URL which tends to change anyway.

    When you paste that into your WordPress post, it embeds the image along with various Facebook icons showing the number of likes etc.

    But every so often, instead of embedding just that image, it will display a cluster of images, like some sort of “album header”. It puts the name of the current album and says X photos, but X is less than the number of photos in the album anyway.

    Anyone know how to stop it from doing this? I think the first image in an album does it, and several random ones throughout the album. Currently the only way I have to fix this is to reupload the images whose links are having this effect.

  • Hi there,

    When you embed a Facebook link, we send a request to Facebook asking them what we should show for that link, and just display what they send us. So if your link is displaying an album rather than an image, it’s because that’s what the post whose URL you used contains, and what Facebook is sending us to display.

    Can you give a link to a post or page on your site that shows an embed like this? Most probably, for multi-image posts on Facebook, you still need to use the image-specific link if you only want to embed a single image from that post.

    I’ll see if I can load up an example, but it is a little random. I’ve encountered it multiple times.

    Say for instance an album has pictures 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

    Maybe this might happen:

    the link for picture 1 shows a composite of 1,2,3 with the Album title over them
    link for 2 .. shows just 2
    link for 3 … shows just 3
    link for 4 … shows just 4
    the link for picture 5 shows a composite of 5,6,7 with the Album title over them
    link for 6 .. shows just 6
    link for 7 .. shows just 7
    the link for picture 8 shows a composite of 8,9,10 with the Album title over them
    link for 9 .. shows just 9
    link for 10 .. shows just 10

  • Yes, I understand what you’re saying. But we have no control over that. We simply display what Facebook gives us for that particular link. If Facebook returns an image gallery rather than a single image for the link, that’s what will display.

    Yes, I understand the issue is unlikely to be caused by WordPress … just wondering if any users had found a clever workaround to this random oddity
