Embedding is not as easy as they make it sound
-
Can’t embed video. They claim you just copy and paste the URL, but that doesn’t work for me. Do I need to have the premium version of WordPress, or am I just not doing something right?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Embedding directly with a URL seems to often not work as hoped. You must ensure that the URL is not made into a link, and that it is on a separate line.
If that still doesn’t work, then try using a shortcode, which just means you put this where you want the video
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?xxxxxxxx]obviously replacing the xxxx with the proper URL, but that should work. You don’t need to pay to embed videos. -
Not every video will embed directly – YouTube & Vimeo should embed directly and the code converted to WP short code in the process.
What video were you trying to embed?
-
As danielisreading said, the URL must be on its own line and the URL is not a link. If it is a link, use the Unlink button in the Visual Editor’s toolbar (the one that looks like a broken link).
I must say that so far (knock wood) I’ve never had a problem with the oembed method and I’ve been using it on my sites since 2009.

I got it to work. I guess centering it was messing it up? No idea. Thanks guys! I finished my first page. Check it out if you’d like.

@raggymonster Exactly! When you use the oembed method, you can’t have any extra code on the same line as the URL of the video.
Having said that, if you use the shortcode instead, you can do a lot more with positioning of embedded objects by following these tips from Panos http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/04/06/positioning-shortcode-objects-pt-1/

I am having the same problem – I almost always get the message ‘this video does not exist’ – and ideas why? It’s not highlighted, it’s on his own line etc. I followed all the instructions on this thread and the WP-help-page meticulously

@thatisthespirit
What is the source of the video please?
Is it a video that WordPress.com supports?
The video embeds that WordPress.com supports for all of our blogs – no upgrade required are found here. http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/ -

The youtube [shortcode] works every time for me.

I found out what the problem seems to be: I played the video I wanted to post as part of my ‘Favourites’ playlist – and the code is different for that apparently. So, it seems you can’t do that. Thanks again timethief!

Hi again,
It’s good to see that you worked through this and discovered the problem and accomplished this. Happy blogging!
