Embedding of customized Google Map does not work
-
Hello,
I have exactly the same problem as described in this forum thread:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/custom-google-maps-embed-error?replies=6
In short: I try to embed a customized Google Map, but the code, copied from Google and modified by WordPress engine, leads to a 404 error.
The thread summarizes, if I understand it correctly, that the problem cannot be solved by myself because of the way WordPress alters the Google code.
The code Google generates for embedding is:
<iframe src=”https://mapsengine.google.com/map/embed?mid=z_CNFH9GWzWU.kKTSA_oT_1VA” width=”640″ height=”480″></iframe>The code modified by WordPress is
[googlemaps https://maps.google.com/map/embed?mid=z_CNFH9GWzWU.kKTSA_oT_1VA&w=640&h=480%5DI have also tried to correct the URL from “maps.google.com” (as modified by WordPress) to “mapsengine.google.com” (as generated by Google), as also discussed in the forum, but it has no effect except that there is no more error message, just a blank page.
Is this problem known? Can it be solved by myself? If not, is an update planned? When?
Tank you very much in advance for your answer.
And Thanks for all the other wonderful features that are working fine! :-)
Best regards
Maria and Stefan Tintera
(latinteramerica.wordpress.com)P.S. I have just seen that this question will be posted into a forum, not directly to WordPress. I still do not change the text, hoping that there are any new findings about this issue. Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
You cannot use the new Google map engine. You must use this older version > http://en.support.wordpress.com/google-maps/ -
Hi, thanks for your really quick response! :-)
I am using the old maps engine. I have also checked the link you provide prior to my post, but this describes embedding a normal map, not a customized one. The problem with the customized maps is discussed in the thread I have quoted above. I wonder if that problem is known to the WordPress developers and if and when it will be fixed, resp. if not, how it can be reported. -
I’ll tag this thread for a Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

OK, great, thank you very much, timethief.
Until there is a solution I think we will put a link to Google into the blog as a workaround. Or does anybody have another good idea for a workaround? -
There is no workaround I am aware of and there’s very little here I’m not aware of. lol :D
If this thread keeps getting bumped with new comments it will take longer to get Staff help. Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention and through all email support tickets in order of datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.
How long it takes to clear the threads and support tickets depends on how many Happiness Engineers are working on them at any given point in time. It also depends on how complex the issues in each thread and ticket are are.
Don’t bump your thread because it’s not in your best interest to post to it after it has been tagged for Staff help. Don’t create a new thread or send an email for support either.
When bloggers keep bumping any thread thinking they are going to get service from Staff more quickly they aren’t thinking straight because that moves the timestamps forward and it takes longer to get a response. The same is true if you email more than once the date moves forward and it takes longer to get help.

Hi there!
It looks like we were just working on this yesterday. Can you try doing the embed again with the mapsengine link? And make sure that the URL is not a hyperlink in your editor!
And I’ll take a look at that Google Maps document and make sure its up to date.
Let me know if that works for you! :)

Hi Shawn, thanks so much – yes it works! Well, in a way: The link is still cut from “mapsengine” to “maps”, and in that case there is still a 404 error. But, after correcting the link back to “mapsengine” in the WordPress generated code, it shows the map and not anymore an empty window.
So, if you update the manual (what I understood you are planning), maybe this fact should be mentioned, to not confuse somebody who has not read this discussion.
Thanks and regards

Thanks for that information! I don’t think that should be happening, so I’ll do some testing and check in with the team about that!

I am having a similar issue to those listed above. I created a Google Map using Map Engine LITE. I embedded the following source code
<iframe src=”https://mapsengine.google.com/map/embed?mid=znvxnVv5iIAY.kHzMPb_8Y-WQ” width=”640″ height=”480″></iframe>
on to a page within my WordPress website and when I published the page it simply showed the code text and not the interactive Google Map image. Here’s the confusing part, I embedded the same code within the First Footer Widget Area on my Home Page and it worked fine. I even scaled the width and height down to make it fit.
Can you tell me why it won’t embed into a page within my site but will embed on my home page widget area?Any help you can give is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi cycchad!
It sounds like you inserted your code into the Visual editor. You’ll need to enter it into the Text editor. You can read more about the different editors here:
Let me know if you still have trouble with your code!
