Embedding PDF in WordPress.com – plugin needed

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi WordPress.com,

Could you add the plug in PDF and PPT Viewer? It allows people to embed .pdf files in WordPress. Here is the info on the plug in: http://vladimir-k.blogspot.ca/2009/09/pdf-and-ppt-viewer-wordpress-plugin-for.html. Through forums, I just learned that I can’t upload plugins to WordPress.com and I’m not savvy enough to move to WordPress.org. It would help a lot to be able to upload PDF files to my WordPress.com site.

Thanks. Please let me know at (email visible only to moderators and staff) if and when (or WHERE, if there’s a way to get it already) the plugin will be available.

    Thanks again,

    Julia

    See:

    Uploading documents
See here for accepted file types http://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/ The following processes are outlined particularly for users who wish to upload a document and add its download link to a blog post or page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/uploading-documents/

    Embedding documents
If you want to embed the document itself into a post, then you will have to use a third party application like Scribd or Google Docs.

    Embed From Google Docs

Thank you. That helped, somewhat. I transferred my doc into Google Docs and embedded it into my WordPress site. However, the embed window is tiny! The document is long (it would have been about 15 pdf pages) and the window is smaller than a postcard. So it will take a LOT of scrolling to read even a few pages of it. Is there any way to make the window the size of a letter page?

    Thanks again for your help.

Alright, I’ve decided to just transfer the text into the body of the post. Seems like that will solve my problem. I just wanted to be able to upload pdf files to keep the formatting (it gets messed up).

My next question is: How do I delete the above post?

Questions don’t get deleted from the forum so that future users can search and learn from them.

If you want to embed a Google doc and make it larger than the default once you have it inserted into your post or page you can go back and edit the width and height attributes in the shortcode. Your main content area is 450px wide and you can pick any height that you think looks good – this section is still quite narrow for embedding though!

Thanks for your help! I hope WordPress creates a plugin soon that lets users upload pdfs or Google docs in full, without the extra scrolling within a small post.

I learned that administrators are able to delete or modify posts. Could an administrator remove the link to my blog from this forum? The relevant example of what I was wondering about is gone (the Google doc embed) so it’s not useful here anyway.

    Thank you!

I think it would work better if you used a theme with a wider content area, or of your theme had a full page width template but I wouldn’t advise changing everything just to fit in a PDF. You can always link to DropBox (or any other file hosting service of your choice) to offer your visitors a download link.

As this is a public forum threads are only deleted if they absolutely have to be for privacy/safety reasons so this one is likely to stay up.

If you want to ask a private question of staff in future you can use the email contact form.
