Embedding video in WP

  I am developing a website using a WordPress Theme and would like to embed a video on a page. I uploaded video to YouTube. Following WordPress’s “support” ( http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/ ) I could not Embed the video following their directions. I copied suggested shortcode and changed address to youtube URL of the video, still no success. I was able to hyperlink to the video on YouTube. When clicking on the hyperlink I am directed to YouTube where the video is located but with the usual YouTube format with all the junk and other videos. This just doesn’t work for me. I would like to have the video embedded on my website page, you click on it, the video plays. Am I missing something?
