Embedding Videos…

Is there a special way to embed videos? Sometimes I can get them to work. Other times, the videos do not show up. I usually copy the code from a video source (such as youtube) and paste it into the code tab when writing a new post.

Here is one that worked (http://familyreformation.wordpress.com/2007/11/05/emmas-nocturnal-visits/)

I couldn’t get the embedded video to work here, however (http://familyreformation.wordpress.com/2007/10/29/miracles-do-happen/)

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

For YouTube use this format in the code tab, including the brackets: [youtube=theurl]

    For Google videos, see:

And also it depends on where the video is from.

Can I add flash? video? Embed other media?

Can I tag my question onto this thread? I want to post a video from Wal-Mart, but when I do, it doesn’t appear on my blog. Here’s the code:

    <object width=’400′ height=’336′ type=’application/x-shockwave-flash’ data=’http://video.walmartstores.com/video/flash/MediaRoomPlayer.swf?xmlpath=http://video.walmartstores.com/Video/StreamXml.ashx?id=902&embed=true’><param name=’movie’ value=’http://video.walmartstores.com/video/flash/MediaRoomPlayer.swf?xmlpath=http://video.walmartstores.com/Video/StreamXml.ashx?id=902&embed=true’ /><embed src=’http://video.walmartstores.com/video/flash/MediaRoomPlayer.swf?xmlpath=http://video.walmartstores.com/Video/StreamXml.ashx?id=902&embed=true’ type=’application/x-shockwave-flash’ width=’400′ height=’336′></embed></object>

I appreciate any help you can provide to this newbie.

@trooper – that code uses Flash, which is stripped out for security reasons, as are Javascript and iframes. Please see the link in carocat’s post above, dated Nov. 5th.

ellaella – thank you! I was begining to suspect that was the case but since I don’t really know what I’m doing, I couldn’t be sure. I appreciate your help. I guess this means I’m out of luck, huh?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes you are out of luck when it comes to flash, javascript, forms and iframes. We cannot use them on wordpress.com blogs.

  • Unknown's avatar

In that format, yes. But you can search for it on YouTube or one of the other supported formats, and if it’s downloadable you can grab a copy and upload it to one of the supported platforms (copyright issues aside; I did that and the video got nuked by YouTube).

raincoaster and timetheif – my thanks to you both. I appreciate your input on this. I have someone from Wal-Mart’s IT department reviewing this to see if there’s some way they can provide me the video in a compatible format.

I guess there are programs like Zamzar, et. al., to convert the file. But I’m leary that this might violate some copyright laws, or blogging protocol or something (plus, it’s over my head).

    Thank you!

troper – sorry I botched your name the first time. Long day. I think asking the IT department for a compatible version is very smart. Best of luck.

No problem at all ellaella – just don’t call me late for dinner :-)

I just got a reply – they’re going to send it to me in Windoww Media format (I guess that’ll work?)

    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

    …correction, “Windows”

  • Unknown's avatar

You won’t be able to post Windows Media, but you can upload it to YouTube. As long as you’ve got WalMart’s permission, I don’t forsee a problem with that.

  • Unknown's avatar

My contact at Wal-Mart just informed me that they don’t have a WMV, but he will have their IT department send me a Quicktime version instead via their filesend program.

Will I need to upload that to YouTube or GoogleVideo also before I can post it?

Thank you for all your help on this!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, you’ll need to do that. Pick whichever works for you; it’s easy to upload, and I believe they both take Quicktime.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh, poo!

I downloaded the .mov file they sent me and uploaded it to YouTube. I copied and pasted the embed code, but it still doesn’t show up:

    <object width=”425″ height=”355″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NXSwFEXRTCM&rel=0&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&border=0″></param><param name=”wmode” value=”transparent”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/NXSwFEXRTCM&rel=0&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&border=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” wmode=”transparent” width=”425″ height=”355″></embed></object>

Is that because the word “flash” still appears in the code?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I found my answer – unless I upgrade my space, .mov files can’t be used. Thank you all for your help – I appreciate it! :-)

I guess I am confused. I have uploaded several videos from YouTube and they work just fine. But now if I try to upload a video (this or any other video), nothing shows. My account says I have used 0% of my 50mg. I have always uploaded my videos into my posts using Windows Live Writer, but now even in Live Writer nothing shows up except a big blank spot where the video should go.

  • Unknown's avatar

You don’t have to upload anything to wordpress if a video is on YouTube. Simply go to your Code tab, enter — including brackets —

    [youtube=urlinquestion]

And bingo. You have a video in your post.
