Empty space to right side of editor

    I noticed today that the new editor shrinks in width when the height of the viewport is “small”:

    I tested this in both Firefox and Chrome, and both exhibited the same behaviour.

    I dug into the code and found the cause (line 7583, according to Firebug):

    .short-display .editor-content .main-column .post-editor {
    width: 70%;
    }

    Changing the value to 100%, or even removing the rule entirely because it inherits a value of 100% already, causes the editor to fill the width as it would if the viewport height were larger.

    I don’t know if this is intentional, but I would think that the editor should fill the whole width regardless of the viewport height.

    For the record, I don’t use the new editor (lest anyone from the ever-growing thread think I’m a hypocrite or something), but do I check up on its progress now and then.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for this feedback! That “short-display” mode in the editor is related to how the editor works on smaller touch screens. Is it usual for you to work off a browser window that size?

    I want to check because very few screens that aren’t touch screens are small enough to trigger that mode (and thus the narrow editor), but if you find that you often work with a smaller browser window that’s certainly something our team needs to consider.

    It is, although I do admit that I’m in the minority. I’m more traditional and have a couple of toolbars at the top:

    Consequently, my viewport size tends to be around 1000×516.
    I usually can’t ask for help because I have too many addons that might interfere, but I don’t think that’s relevant in this case.

    On a related note, because of my “small” viewport height, the My Sites menu cuts off without any way to access the bottom items:

    Thanks for those details! I’m checking with our team to see if we can resolve that for you. I’m not sure if or when they will find a solution, but I’ll let you know when I get an update about it.

    On a related note, because of my “small” viewport height, the My Sites menu cuts off without any way to access the bottom items:
