Enable Browser Notification… Help!

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am using Firefox Quantum 62.0.2 on a Mac. The ability to enable browser notification has disappeared. The actual enable/disable button is gone. That ability and button still appears on Chrome and an earlier version of Firefox. Does anyone know if WordPress discontinued this feature for Firefox Quantum?
    I really miss that feature and am trying to determine if this is a problem on my end or just a feature that no longer exists for the latest version of Firefox!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I posted this problem yesterday and no one answered. No one is responding now either. I guess I’ll have to just forget about it or find another way to get some help. Oh well…

    Hi There!

    As far as I am aware, Firefox and Chrome do not interfere with notifications settings for wordpress.com. However you can follow the link below to enable the notifications :

    Enabling Notifications

    You can follow these simple steps as well :D :

    1. Restarting your browser is often the simplest solution, especially if it has been running for an extended period of time
    2. Make sure that your browser is running. WordPress.com does not have to be open, but the browser itself must be running, at least in the background.
    3. Make sure you have browser notifications enabled: even if it’s reported to be enabled, disable them, and enable them again.

    I will tag this as modlook for further support. I really hope this helps :)!

    This is mostly a peer-to-peer forum and perhaps no one saw your earlier post or had an answer to give you.

    I see what you mean at https://wordpress.com/me/notifications and have tagged this for Staff attention. Since you posted this directly in the forums, you may also have noticed the sticky about the Grand Meetup at the top of this forum concerning limited Staff availability. Thanks for your patience.

    Ah-sorry about that, neglected to refresh first. :)

    Thank you for your help! I’m brand new to this forum and to WordPress in general. I did not read the Grand Meetup sticky yet, so thank you for the heads up and I apologize for seeming impatient or ungrateful for your help. I do appreciate your help and now understand better the nature of the forum. Thank you!!

    Thank you chandnissirohi…I already went through all of those procedures before coming here. I appreciate your tagging it for further support!

  • Hi there,

    I’m typing this reply in Firefox 62.0.2, and I see the option to enable browser notifications at https://wordpress.com/me/notifications.

    Are you saying it’s completely missing for you? Are you using Mac OS or Windows, and do you have any browser add-ons active that might be blocking JavaScript code from loading?

    @justjennifer
    , do I understand correctly that you don’t see it either?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @kokkieh I use Mac OS and this occurs with all plugins disabled ,

    @justjennifer
    provided the screenshot in her response that shows no enable/disable option is there..completely missing. I’d send you a screenshot, but I don’t know how to do that here yet.

    No @kokkieh, I do not see it either in Firefox. The box is entirely missing for me in Firefox Quantum (on Win10Pro) and I have neither enabled nor disabled it in the past.

    @larrykutcher
    – the support site is great for finding information. :) https://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=screenshot brings up “Making a screenshot”

  • Unknown's avatar

    @justjennifer Thank you so much for helping me and showing me that it was missing for you as well. You saved me a lot more troubleshooting time and stress! I feel a sense of relief :) And thank you for the link about screenshots as well!

  • Unknown's avatar

    @justjennifer I’m sorry I was not more clear about screenshots. I know how to make them. I was meaning that I don’t know yet how to post them here in this forum, to further assist in explaining my issue.

  • That’s really weird.

    Can you please check the browser console for any errors?

    Advanced Browser Troubleshooting

    Depending on how comfortable you are with the browser inspector, you can also try the following. Right click on the page and select Inspect Element. Then click this button:

    Then move your mouse pointer over the area at the top where that setting should appear. Does is look like it’s trying to highlight any collapsed/hidden elements on the page?

    @kokkieh
    – my Web Console looks nothing like the screenshot in the support guide. There is no specific Javascript console. What I am getting are these messages under “Errors” and “Logs”

    Failed to register/update a ServiceWorker for scope ‘https://wordpress.com/’: Storage access is restricted in this context due to user settings or private browsing mode. notifications:31:8

    Failed to register/update a ServiceWorker for scope ‘https://wordpress.com/’: Storage access is restricted in this context due to user settings or private browsing mode. build.d9cf86610cc9c1e01746.min.js:27:295065

    but I am in a regular browser window and cannot imagine what setting I might have changed that would block the appearance of that notice. I usually leave default settings as is.

    When I use the Inspector and hover over the area on the page where the notice should appear, nothing looks to be hidden in the space between the site list and the label tabs at the top of the page.

    Hope that helps somebody.
