Enable Markdown — help pls

I am having difficulty enabling Markdown on one of my wordpress.com hosted sites. When I go to Dashboard > Setting > Writing I expect to find an option for Markdown with a checkbox. I am not seeing this.

    (Clipped fro Help pages)
To enable Markdown for posts and pages, go to Settings → Writing in your dashboard, and check the box labeled Use Markdown for posts and pages. Click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page to apply. You will now be able compose posts and pages using Markdown.

OK, I found it — for the benefit of others, it’s the white-on-black menu from Dashboard > Settings > Writing. (There are two menus which have some of the same categories — a WordPress idiosyncrasy).

Having checked the checkbox for ‘Markdown enabled’, it makes no difference. My markdown hash-identified headings ## heading 2 etc just show up with the hashes.

    Any suggestions?
