Entries imported from Xanga are scrambled

  • Unknown's avatar

I am importing my old entries from Xanga, and some of them are transferring fine, but others are not showing up properly! Here’s a short excerpt of what it looks like:
    **
    %20true%20%3A%20false%3B%0A%7D%0A%0A/**%0A%20*%20Checks%20if%20the%20firebug%20console%20is%20available%0A%20*%20@param%20c%0A%20*%20@return%0A%20*/%0Afunction%20_leoHighlightsFirebugConsoleAvailable%28c%29%20%7B%0A%20%20%20try%0A%20%20%20%7B%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20if%28_leoHighlightsClassExists%28_FirebugConsole%29%20%26%26%20%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20window.console%20%26%26%20console.log%20%26%26%20%0A%20%
    **
This can go on for hundreds of lines before another entry comes up. Can anyone explain what this is? Are these old entries that somehow got scrambled? Or are they code that shouldn’t be showing up? Should I manually delete them, or will I accidentally be deleting old entries?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi there,

For instructions on how to do a Xanga import, please see: http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/import-from-xanga/

Note that you must open the .zip export folder you get from Xanga and import ALL of the files included in the .zip folder individually.

If you have trouble please try a different browser. http://browsehappy.com

Thanks, Timethief! I’ve been importing my Xanga files individually and have made sure I’m using the latest version of Chrome – here’s hoping the Staff can figure out what’s happening!

    Hi there!

Can you give me a link to where you’re finding this code after your import?

It looks like a coded version of some browser-based plugin stuff. (For instance, the code %20 is a space character and %3A is a colon character. So one part of the code you pasted says “Checks if the firebug console is available”.)

    Hi shawnajroberts,

Thanks for looking into this for me! I’m relieved to hear this may just be code and not scrambled entries. Instead of an excerpt, here’s the full code I saw after an entry, copy and pasted below (warning: it’s long!). If this is code, can I just go back and erase this portion of my entries? Or will that change the entries themselves?

    Thanks again for your help!

    [code removed by staff]

Thanks for that. It does look like just some code that can be removed. Did you have an embed code in your xanga posts? It looks like this is some JavaScript and iframe code, which usually points to some sort of embedded code that you added to your posts.

At any rate, it looks totally safe to remove. I don’t see anything that would make me think this is actual post content that has gotten scrambled.

To keep this thread useful to other users, I’m going to remove the code from your latest post above since it’s so long. :)

Hmmm… I think I’d added a tracker at one point, but that wouldn’t explain why it only shows up at the end of random entries..

Anyway, I’m relieved to hear that they’re not scrambled entries – hopefully this means all of my old entries have transferred successfully!

    Thanks for your help!

In that case, it may have exported once per ‘page’ of entries?

Let me know if I can help with anything else!

  • Unknown's avatar

Ohh – that makes sense. Thanks!

    I’m happy to help! :)

Sorry, Shawnajroberts, but I have one more question: I’ve gone through and deleted the code, but now I have another problem – it looks like some of my favorite entries didn’t make the transfer over! Any idea what might have happened?
    Thanks!

I’m not sure why that would happen. You could try reimporting the files, but our system may think we already imported those posts, so it won’t import them again. It’s worth a try though.

Your other option, if there aren’t too many of these missing posts, would be to copy the content over yourself.

Sorry I don’t have a better solution for you on this.

Oh, ok – thanks! I might try to re-import some of the files, then!

Let me know how it goes!
