Errant spam users creating subscriber accounts on our production instance
-
Hello community!
Our site, mrgn.ai, has been getting spam messages through our site lately, and as a result, the spammers submitting messages are being created as subscribers in our WordPress account. We have Captcha enabled, which should stop the messages, but why are these people being created as users?

Hi there, I don’t see any WordPress.com sites under your account here.
What is the URL of the site with the problem?
NOTE: We can only assist with websites hosted here at WordPress.com. If you’re using the WordPress software but hosted elsewhere, you will need to reach out to your hosting provider or the WordPress.org community for guidance: https://wordpress.org/support/

Thanks staff-blorbo
The URL is mrgn.ai. We’re using WP hosted on WP Engine. I will reach out to them now, though I figure the UI is the same, and this is an issue specifically with WP itself. Hoping the hive mind can help me get to the bottom of it.

Ah, ok, that is a self-hosted WordPress.org site, hosted with WP Engine, which we can’t help with here.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/
WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
With that said, if you don’t need user registration on your site, you can switch that off at Settings > General in your site’s Dashboard.
