Error 404 message received for all Categories

Suddenly none of my Categories work. I just get Error 404. Can someone tell me what to do — in WordPress for Dummies language?? (email visible only to moderators and staff)

@davidderrick
(1) You are not the only one affected. Send in a feedback so the staff know exactly which of your blogs (the url) is affected and include a link back to this thread.Other bloggers who have the same problem – http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=4557&replies=14
http://wordpress.com/forums/topic.php?id=5492&replies=9(2) I recommend removing your email address so spam crawlers do not find it or at least writing is as davidderrick at yahoo dot com so the bots don’t follow it. The best practice is to never post an email address on a forum unless it’s a disposable address that does not contain your name.

I believe the topic being discussed here is the way that links to categories have been changed from /tag/categoryname to /category/categoryname but the categories themselves have not been moved, meaning that links to categories currently point to non-existent locations.
I hope this is fixed very soon, but I’m also curious to understand how the situation came to be in the first place. If it’s a restructuring of WordPress that’s taking a few hours to complete, surely there are smoother ways to make this change?
I’m puzzled by David’s assertion that he gets a 404. In my experience, WordPress never gives a 404 error; if you visit a non-existent page, it simply defaults to the front page of the blog.

I’m also experiencing the same problem. Thanks Mark for taking care of it. Especially on a holiday. I hope you had, had your dinner before digging in. :)

Well – I definitely AM getting 404 on all Categories. And although Mark seems to have fixed it last night, the problem is back again this morning London time. These things always happen on holidays: I hope we don’t have to wait until next week to see a fix here.
Happy holidays.

Send a feedback immediately; there’s only an hour and a half’s difference between the “fix” and your post.

Seems that the problem is that the url is “site”/tag/”categoryname” instead of “site”/category/”categoryname”…
If you manually exchange “tag” with “category” in the address-field the right result is achieved…
So where the “tag” entered into the system has to be a central problem within WordPress

@zozem
@didjeridust
@davidderrickYour blogs should be fixed.
For everyone else that may be having this problem:
The issue here is that yesterday morning (PST) a change was inadvertently made that changed the category links from /tag to /category The change was reverted yesterday evening PST.
If you created or updated a page (not post) on your blog between the time the problem was created and the time that it was fixed, your category links will result in 404 errors. To fix the problem, simply edit and then save a page (not post) on your blog. It doesn’t matter which one and you don’t have to change any of the page’s contents. That should resolve the issue. If it doesn’t, please send in feedback because it is a backend issue and we do not regularly monitor the forums.
