Error 522 on blog using cloudflare
-
My wordpress.com blog DNS runs through cloudflare so that I can get google analytics, and recently I’ve received an error message that reads “Website is offline The server may be down for maintenance, there may be a network problem, or the site may be experiencing excessive load. Error 522 Ray ID: e6ac698961609ac Connection timed out.” All cloudflare help I can find indicates it is an issue with wordpress. I would really appreciate any help. If we can’t get this resolved we will have to move the blog, as we absolutely have to have google analytics.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy,
Earlier today, we had what ended up being a CloudFlare IP address blocked due to an excessive number of requests. The IP was unblocked a few hours ago. I’m able to load your site; if you’re still having an issue, please use CloudFlare’s “Retry Live Version” link at the top of the error page.
Thanks!

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately this has been happening sporadically over the past 7 days, beginning last Friday. So, I doubt the IP address you refer to was mine. It is still happening now. If I click the “Retry for a Live Version” button 2-3 times I’m usually able to get the correct page to load, but this is hardly the experience I would like my users to have. Please help.

The IP address in question was blocked some time ago, but only recently became an issue (at least reported to us first earlier today).
None of the CloudFlare IP addresses, as provided by another user from CloudFlare support, is currently blocked, which was at issue earlier with an user reporting the same error.
CloudFlare uses the same bank of IP addresses to access sites. One of their servers accessed WordPress.com an usually high number of times for a single IP address, so it was blocked as a stability precaution. Since CloudFlare provided a list of their IP addresses, we were able to check all of the ones that would have resulted in that error.
I’ve tried a few different times and can’t replicate the error message. If CloudFlare could provide any additional information, I can verify it with our systems folks that the earlier set of IP addresses that we cleared (and unblocked, in one case) should resolve your issue as well or if there is something else afoot.
If you see this again in the future, please do let us know as soon as possible so we can check into it sooner rather than later.
Thanks.

Another possibility – how did you setup CloudFlare to access your WordPress.com site? If you used IP addresses, we commonly change those out, so there may be something related along those lines—CloudFlare attempting to access the site using an IP address that is out of regular rotation, etc.

Unfortunately I’m not sure how to answer that question. I do know that I changed the wordpress nameservers to cloudflare nameservers, and I set it up through the cloudflare website, not through any partner.
Is there any specific information I can provide that would be helpful? I’m honestly not sure what would be dangerous information for me to reveal publicly here. But here goes. My nameservers are ian.ns.cloudflare.com which points to 173.245.59.118 and kim.ns.cloudflare.com which points to 173.245.58.126
I can send you my DNS zone file from cloudflare if that would be helpful… That has a list of IP addresses… I’m a bit out of my league here if it wasn’t obvious already.

Cloudflare reported that all of my errors were coming from two IP addresses, 72.233.2.58 and 72.233.69.6, which based on a dig query no longer seem to be valid IPs for my domain. I changed those records to 192.0.81.250 and 192.0.80.250 and it seems to have fixed the issue.
Do you have suggestions for how I can know when wordpress changes my IP addresses?

Outside of an error, there’s not a good way to tell when the IPs change. As we commission and decommission datacenters, CDN providers, servers, we’ll change them up. Since our officially supported method of using domains is to use our nameservers, the changes are transparent to almost all of our users.
CloudFlare has the suggestion of using a CNAME entry for your domain to our loadbalancer at lb.wordpress.com, which should work long-term. If we make any massive overhauls to our internal network, that could change, though that’s far, far less likely than changing a couple of IPs.
CloudFlare’s instructions on how to set that up are at https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/200168886-How-do-I-add-a-WordPress-com-Custom-Domain-Mapping-site-to-CloudFlare-
Cheers!

Seems to work great! Thanks SO MUCH. Here’s to hoping there are no massive overhauls anytime soon :-)
Thanks again!
