Error after mapping a domain to a WordPress.com site
-
Hi – I started a WordPress.org site … maryewarner.com … via GoDaddy. After running it for a few months, I determined I didn’t want to have to continually run updates so decided to switch over to a WordPress.com site and map it to the new domain.
I started maryewarner.wordpress.com and imported the content from maryewarner.com.
I then mapped maryewarner.com to the maryewarner.wordpress.com site.
Now, when I go to my Site Manager page, there is a red triangle next to maryewarner.com. When I click on the the triangle, I get the message “Can’t access this site data.” When I try other menu items under this site, I get other error messages, such as “Error retrieving site settings. Make sure your Jetpack is up to date.”
Because I’m now using a WordPress.com site, I don’t think I have Jetpack as an option, although I did use Jetpack when my site was hosted by GoDaddy.
I tried one more thing to get rid of the red triangle. I went to Store/My Domains at maryewarner.wordpress.com and switched my primary site to maryewarner.com so that the WordPress site would redirect to that domain. That made things worse on my Site Management page. It gives me an error for both sites. Plus, I noticed that some of the photo links are broken on the maryewarner.com site.
What can I do to correct this error and get maryewarner.com to be my primary domain?
Thanks for your help.

After waiting about 24 hours with no response from WordPress, I decided to see if I could figure out my own solution to the red triangle of doom. Here’s what I did to fix the problem, in case others have the same trouble.
On my WordPress Site Manager page, I saw both maryewarner.com and maryewarner.wordpress.com as separate sites. When I examined the settings pages for both sites, I noticed that maryewarner.com had an option to disconnect Jetpack. I had used Jetpack with that domain name when I had a WordPress.org blog hosted via GoDaddy. Knowing that Jetpack is not used on WordPress.com blogs, I wondered if this was the genesis of the problem.
I risked it and opted to disconnect Jetpack. This removed maryewarner.com from my Site Manager list of blogs. (Little heart attack there, just in case the damage was irreparable.)
Then, I went to the Dashboard of maryewarner.wordpress.com and selected Store/My Domains, where I selected maryewarner.com as the primary domain.
That did it. Back on my Site Manager page, maryewarner.wordpress.com became maryewarner.com and there is no more red triangle of doom.
Hope this solution is useful to others with the same glitch.
