Error Code 500
-
I cannot access my site/blog. The last time I clicked on the update for WP, I lost access to my site. I keep getting a Error Code 500. I contacted my host server and they want me to buy support to fix this but, since this happened when I tried to update WP, I think it might be a problem with that update. I feel a little like my blog is being held hostage to get me to buy tech support….and I guess I will have to since I am not technically able to fix the problem…well, actually I can’t even get to my site to even try to fix it even if I thought I could fix it. So, if you can help me out, then I would be most appreciative. Is there any simple way to revert back to things before I clicked on that update message? It was working fine before that. I really don’t want to ask in the forums….is there anyway to actually get support from a person? Thanks, Joan
I don’t have a site linked to this WordPress.com account

Hi,
It looks like your site is using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but is hosted with another webhost.
We’re only able to provide support for WordPress websites that are hosted by us here at WordPress.com. For help with a WordPress site hosted elsewhere you’ll need to ask over at the WordPress.org forums:
https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Depending on the level of support that is included with your hosting plan, your webhost’s support team may also be able to assist.
If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open-source WordPress software you can read this article:

However…
Allow me to use this opportunity to say that if you WERE hosted here at WordPress.com, you would have access to 24/7 WordPress specific assistance from a world-class support team and we could likely get this sorted out for you.

We have a guide to help move your site to WordPress.com here and our support team can also assist:

Please let us know if you have any questions about WordPress.com, our plans, or our features.

Ok. I’ve been thinking I should move to WP straight-up for some time now. But I’m not really technical so I get confused about tech things easily. Do I first have to buy a plan and set up something with WP or first try to transfer over to WP and then set up a new plan? My current domain name/host is set to renew in August so I think it would be best to get into WP proper and be set up before then. I’m torn between the Personal and the Premium but think either one would suffice but don’t want to lose my domain name. How would I set up a new site at WP with a domain name already in use until I can get to it and cancel it? How do I transfer a site that is currently broken and I cannot access it…or, can I?
I know this is probably not your job but your advice has been good so far…..any additional advice would be helpful. Should I try to reach out to sales support instead?
Thanks, Joannie

You do get extra features in the Premium plan – for instance, if you purchase an annual Premium plan you get access to live chat support, which is great if you need a lot of guidance. But you can compare all the different plan options here:

You certainly can get your site set up here before switching your domain over!
When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.
Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:
https://transferto.wordpress.com/
Note that you will need a paid plan at the time you want to map or move your domain to the site.
How do I transfer a site that is currently broken and I cannot access it…or, can I?
That you would not be able to do, so you would need to reach out to your current hosting provider for help in getting your site back online, then you can use the guide linked to above to start moving your site to us.
I hope that clarifies things! Let us know if you have any questions.

Ok. One more question (at least). I admit, I’m trying hard not to pay my host any more money to get my site back on line. I realize that I cannot transfer to WP.Com right now because I cannot access my site. But, I was getting back ups from JetPack before I lost access. Is it possible to start a new site in WP and use the backups to get it all set up even if I cannot access my old site? I really don’t want to spent money for support when I’m planning to switch to WP anyway. Thanks in advance.

That is something we can do, but it would need to be a site on our Business or eCommerce plan on this end.
You could start with one of those plans, and then ask for a partial refund and downgrade within the refund period: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/#refund-policy
