Error establishing a database connection

    Hi,

My company previously had a WordPress site but the domain expired. I have since renewed the domain but the wordpress site is still inaccessible. I need some help getting back into it but I’m being met with this error message :

    “Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure the database server is running?”

Can I have some help resolving these issues please as I need to get this site back up and running.

    Thanks,
    Seb

  • Hi there,

It looks like your site is not hosted by us (WordPress.com). It is probably using the open-source WordPress software and it is hosted elsewhere. Therefore, you need to contact your hosting provider regarding your issue.

We’re only able to provide support for WordPress websites that are hosted by us. For help with your site you can also ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open-source WordPress software you can read this article:

We had previously been running the site here using WordPress CMS :

    https://www.europeantourhospitality.com/wp-admin/profile.php

Is it possible to look into whether that historically used to be the case as the team here are saying they used to log into WordPress to make changes to the site previously.

    Thanks

We had previously been running the site here using WordPress CMS :

The open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) is a separate entity from the managed hosting provider WordPress.com (which is where you are now).

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers.

You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

We have no record (past or present) of your site being hosted here at WordPress.com, so it was hosted at a different hosting provider. We also have no insight or way to see where your site was hosted previously, so you should look into your records to see what company you’ve paid hosting fees to in the past. Since your domain is registered at GoDaddy, that might be the first place you should check as you might have set up the site at the same company.

    I hope that clarifies things.
