Error getting video embed to play

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Lauren,

The problem with replacing them is that I edited the raw files down to create the shorter piece. I’m concerned about putting the time in to re-edit and re-render without knowing it will work. Is there something I can look at in the rendering of the existing piece, or specific settings I should try?

If the adjusted method that you’ve tested created a video that does work, it leads me to believe that it will work again. Unfortunately, however, there is no way to know for certain until you try. I wish I could help with the video-rendering support, but it’s nothing we can assist with. If you need assurance, I suggest trying Vegas’ support folks. We don’t want you to waste your time, either.

I noticed that when my scheduled posts post to Facebook they show up without my website name, and the title of the post is just words, not an active link. I took a screen grab to show you and can email it to you if helpful.

Could you upload the screenshot to your Media Library? That would be very helpful. I can take a look and help you troubleshoot that issue. Is this something that’s always happened? Or is this a recent change? Does the same thing occur when you post to Facebook using your Sharing button on your post?

Looking forward to hearing from you about the Facebook issue, and seeing the images. Thanks very much.

    Hi Robyn,
Thanks again for getting back to me. The original edited version of the video is playing well on my PC, which indicates that the issue is with WordPress.

Regarding the capture of my scheduled posts appearing Facebook, yes, it has been a problem that had been originally reviewed by another Support Person who suggested that it should auto-correct as Facebook got used to seeing my posts, over the next few months. The problem has however gotten worse. When I originally contacted support for guidance,a link to my articles was still appearing. Now, as you can see from the picture, the title link shows up as words, the featured picture is not featured – and instead an album appears, and the post does not come up featured under my website name, it is assigned to WordPress.

I’m expecting the scheduler to auto-post my intro to the article, my site name – instead of Word Press, the title in a link format, and the featured picture as specified in the post.
    Thank you!
    Lauren

    Lauren,

There are definitely a lot of factors that go into a video file’s incompatibility with a browser. I can certainly look at the file itself. I sent you a private email. Please attach the video when you reply and I’ll take a look at it.

Regarding the Facebook issue, it is true that Facebook should “learn.” We don’t have a huge amount of power of what Facebook displays from your posts. We always send the same data, and they pull from your posts what is displayed.

In fact, I just tested your Facebook connection, and everything is working properly when it comes to the information that we’re sending Facebook after you post.

But, let’s do a couple experiments to see if we can encourage Facebook to change the way it reads and pulls from your posts. Could you try three things for me:

    1. First, change the format of the Facebook sharing button on your post. Adjust it from “official buttons” to “icon and text,” and then share with that button. Please let me know if your Post displays as you were hoping when you add it in this manner. You don’t have to keep your button with this display setting, I just want to make certain that things are displayed as you like if you do share in this manner.
    2. Next, use the Facebook debug page. When you enter your URL into the debugger, it clears the cache of information that Facebook has saved about you/your site. Let’s see if it will then pull the appropriate information from your new posts.
    3. Finally, go to Facebook’s app settings and make sure they are configured as you want. Per Facebook, “Apps also have access to your friends list and any information you choose to make public.” Confirm that you’re giving the Facebook WordPress app all the data you wish.

Let me know how those experiments work for you. Thanks!

    Hi Robyn,
I will look into the suggestions above regarding Facebook and report back on all. Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, the video challenges have presented themselves again on my latest post. Here’s what’s happening: I uploaded my video to the media library and the library froze during the upload, multiple times. I uploaded my video to youtube so that I could embed the video into my post. I embedded the video and previewed it. I updated the post and scheduled it to go live this morning. It went live and has no video in it. The exact same thing happened with the sword post – the one you and I have been working on. (It previewed w the youtube embed fully functioning.)
There seems to be some kind of bug w WordPress which is preventing me from including video in my posts. I’m not sure how to proceed and I’m really disappointed that my past two posts have gone live incorrectly.
    Thank you,
    Lauren

    Hi Lauren,

I took a look at your last post. You added a YouTube URL in your latest post, but I didn’t see it embedded as a proper shortcode. I corrected it your latest post. Take a look at the Text tab of your post to see how I formatted the code. Here are the instructions for using shortcodes for YouTube videos. It might work best for you:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

Now, when I look at your post, the video plays great for me. Can you take a look and let me know how it’s working on your end? If it’s working well, can you mimic the shortcode I created within your post, “My Son’s Toy Sword Is Making Me Yell At Everyone?”

There seems to be some kind of bug w WordPress which is preventing me from including video in my posts.

You seem to be dealing with a few unrelated issues. I know it seems like a common bug since it’s all been video-related, but we need to keep the issues separate and zap the root cause of each.

I *think* the YouTube issue should be fixed, if you use shortcodes. Looking forward to hearing back on that.

Upload issues, like the one you described, are usually caused by file size and the amount of bandwidth at the time you’re trying to move your file from Point A to Point B. What was the size of the file? Could you try the upload again? If it doesn’t work, you can send it to me, along with the other video. I know you were having file size issues in getting me the video. I’ve sent instructions via email to assist.

I’m also wondering if you’re optimizing your video for online viewing. I think the information in the following article is VERY helpful:
    http://www.mightybytes.com/blog/swd-video/

You can ignore the carbon emissions part :) and go straight to “Video File Types.” From that point on, I think you’ll find a ton of great information. I think it’ll be especially useful to you as your site grows.

I can work on troubleshooting those video files as soon as I receive them! Thanks.

    Hi Robyn,
Thanks so much for sending all of this along!

Regarding the video on my latest post, yes, your embed is working great for me! I’m not able to tell what we’re doing differently and am dying to know. With the YouTube video, I copied the url link into the post, added the embed code, and also tried the shortcode – each separately – and none of which worked. Each time I inserted the code, as soon as I hit ‘update’, WordPress would delete the code. It was baffling. I clicked the support link you sent but am still confused about why it wasn’t working. I just attempted inserting the shortcode again on the Yelling post and it’s still showing as just a link. It looks like you formatted with brackets but that addition didn’t work for me either.:(

As for the Knives video for my latest post, I just tried to upload it and it worked. I didn’t attach it to the post yet, I wanted to wait until you look at it before I do. It’s in the library labelled ‘Talking Cutlery’.

I’ll check out the mightbytes video you send too!
    Thanks so much!!
    Lauren

    Hi again, Robyn,
I apologize for the double response. I just noticed I hadn’t written regarding the information you sent about Facebook.

I adjusted my share buttons on my site to include Icon and text. I then did a test share directly from the site (using my laptop) and it appeared as it should. But the automatic post – the scheduler – is still posting under Lauren Show & WordPress, instead of Karmamamma, and without a clickable link to the post. I’ve run the debugger in the past and it hasn’t impacted the automatic postings, unfortunately. I also looked at my App settings on Facebook and access to all is granted. I noticed that under ‘who can see you use the WordPress app’, I had ‘friends of friends’ selected. So I changed it to ‘only me’ to see if it will affect the scheduler in a way that forces it to show my posts listed under my site name, instead of WordPress. If that’s not something I should do I can switch it back.

    Thank you again on all,
    Lauren

Hi again Robyn and apologies for the multiple responses,
I’m writing because I’m working on a new post now and I’m not able to embed the latest video I uploaded into my post. The video appears to have uploaded correctly, but when I click ‘insert media’ nothing appears in my post. I’ve tried a few times and the post remains without the embed. I’ve not experienced this challenge previously and if you can guide me through I’d be grateful.
    Thank you so much,
    Lauren

    Hi Lauren!

I know you’ve been working with Robyn extensively on this, but I wanted to make sure you got a timely response from us. :) I think I’m caught up on the issues you’re having now, but let me know if I missed anything.

First, Facebook. Thanks for checking those settings! Can you upload a screenshot of what your shared post looks like on Facebook when you’re in your browser? If it still isn’t working, it might be worth disconnecting your Facebook account and reconnecting it. Just to see if that gives it the kick it needs to see your posts the right way.

    Now, the YouTube embeds.

Each time I inserted the code, as soon as I hit ‘update’, WordPress would delete the code.

This usually means that its formatted incorrectly and our system is misidentifying it as one of the types of code that we don’t allow. Do you happen to have the code you tried? If you add it here I can take a look and see if I can tell why it got stripped. (Use backticks or the ‘code’ formatting button to make sure it doesn’t get stripped or rendered.)

The talkingcutlery video looks normal. I not exactly sure what Robyn wanted to look at there, but definitely let me know if you’re not able to add this video to your post.

I’m writing because I’m working on a new post now and I’m not able to embed the latest video I uploaded into my post.

It looks like your most recent upload didn’t work correctly.

    https://karmamamma.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php?item=841

This usually signifies a connection error, rather than anything wrong with your actual file. Can you try uploading it again directly to the Media Library?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Shawna,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. Regarding Facebook, there’s a screengrab in my media library labelled ‘imagefrompost’. It shows the formatting errors that occur when wordpress auto-publishes one of my posts. When I manually share the post, the errors don’t occur. But I’m expecting the auto-publisher to work correctly. Is there a way to fix it? Just to reiterate, my site name isn’t present (my old site name and wordpress site come up instead), there’s no clickable link to my post, and the featured photo is replaced by all the photos – appearing as an album. This has been an ongoing problem that’s gotten worse over the past few months.

Re. my latest video for my latest post, that’s strange because my media library shows the video uploaded correctly under the name ‘oliverskateboardingmore’, and when I test it in the library it plays. It even shows the video has been assigned to my latest post, but nowhere in my post is the video and every time I select ‘insert’ it vanishes. Usually, I’ll select ‘insert’ and the shortcode will automatically insert into the post.

Regarding my the youtube code for my two previous posts, here’s an example of one of the codes I attempt to insert, which disappears when I update the post: http://youtu.be/wEJk_Zpj4LM
I used the backtick and I’m hoping it displays.

    Thanks so much!
    Lauren

Thanks Lauren! Can you grab a screenshot of your latest Facebook shared post in your desktop browser instead of your phone? I’d like to know how it looks with a post that doesn’t have a Gallery in it.

Thanks for those additional details. I imagine this is related to a slight connection blip. When a file is uploaded, its taken apart into pieces and sent over the physical cables. Sometimes these little packets of data don’t make it all the way. Since that video is broken, and you have this additional “blank” upload, I think that your connection was interrupted in such a way that one of those packets got disconnected from the rest of your file. Can you try uploading it again?

Can you confirm that this is the entire code you’re inserting (just to be sure the forums didn’t strip anything :) :

    http://youtu.be/wEJk_Zpj4LM

I just tested that on a test site and it worked okay. Do you have a draft post where you were trying this? I wonder if there’s some rogue code in your post.

    Hi Shawna,
Thank you and Robyn for getting back to me. We’ve been working on reconciling this issue with video since October 8th, when my first inquiry was made. It hasn’t been fixed and other issues have cropped up in the meantime. I am greatly disappointed as we all have put almost a month of time and effort into its reconciliation.

Video is the main focus of my blog, the reason I create articles and the motivation for my utilization of the WordPress platform. Without its functionality, I’m unable to deliver my work.

I’m writing to ask that a pro-rated refund be issued for my hosting package and my Videopress package so that I can seek another outlet for my videos.

    Thank you,
    Lauren

    Hi Lauren,

I am very sorry you’ve had such ongoing problems with videos. I’ve requested a manual partial refund and will let you know if it goes through.

I’m sorry Robyn and I weren’t able to get things sorted out for you. Here’s some information on various video services we have integrations with, if you’re interested:

    Working With Video

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can do!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Shawna,
Thank you so much for looking into the refund, I appreciate it.

I’m looking into other hosting options that can accommodate video, but if you know of anything or can recommend a path, please let me know. Are the issues with video something that would be resolved by moving the site to WordPress.org? I don’t know anything about self-hosting it, but think the two companies are linked, if I’m not mistaken.

    Thank you again Shawna,
    Lauren

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Lauren,

Here is some information about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. They are not the same company, however we do use and contribute to the free open source WordPress project:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

You’d have to look into the various video plugins available for self hosted sites. There are options other than VideoPress, but I don’t have any experience with them personally.

Also, with a self hosted site, you’ll need to make sure you have enough space with your hosting service to keep video files on the server. So, make sure you look into that when planning your move.

If you’re interested in just signing up for a service like Vimeo to store your video files, you can easily use those links with your WordPress.com or WordPress.org site.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back about the refund.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Shawna,
That’s all helpful! I’ll look into Vimeo. Thank you so much for the suggestion. And thank you again for checking into the refund.
    Best,
    Lauren

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Shawna,
I just wanted to check in to see if you heard back about the video press refund. Unfortunately, it’s not working at all. I can upload videos into the media library but they don’t insert, even after multiple attempts. The issue cropped up on my last three posts.:(
    Thank you,
    Lauren

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Lauren,

Sorry for the delay and thank you so much for your patience. I’ve pinged our ‘refunder’ for an update and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Great, thanks so much!
One other question on the media: wordpress isn’t allowing me to insert photos into my posts. Would you be able to take a look and let me know what might be going on? On my latest post draft, entitled “Friendship Makes Grocery Shopping Fun for the whole family” I select photos from the media library and each time I attempt to insert nothing shows up in the post.
    Thanks so much,
    Lauren

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Shawna and Robyn,
I had reached out at the beginning of this week to see if you can let me know why I’m unable to insert photos into my posts. The last few posts haven’t let me insert photos – especially the newest one on ‘groceries’. Can you take a look and let me know?
    Thanks so much,
    Lauren
