Error Importing Media?

I backed up my WordPress site a couple months ago when my hosting plan was about to expire because I knew I’d be switching to a new company. Flash forward to now, I’ve successfully transferred my domain to the new host and went to upload my .xml file, and I get the message, ‘error importing media’ – in other words, none of my images were able to be uploaded.
After some research into the matter, I’m starting to think I’m screwed because supposedly the backup doesn’t contain the media data itself – only links to the original content? If so, that’d make sense because the original site no longer exists now that I’m with the new hosting company and all…
So I guess I’m wondering: is there any way to fix this issue when the original site no longer exists?
I’m not too thrilled about having to manually upload all of the original images – not only because it’d be tedious, but because I don’t even have access to a lot of those images anymore (the old computer I had them on died). Admittedly, I tend to be about as a tech-savvy as a Neanderthal, so I assumed in backing up my WordPress site, it’d similarly save all the media files locally… won’t be making that mistake again!

Just saw that WordPress included that bit about me needing help with a wordpress.com site, which is not the case (maybe that’s contributing to this issue?). I own the domain, and it was originally hosted on HostGator before I transferred to Bluehost.

Have you contacted your old host? They may have a backup of your old site that can help you out. If not, then, unfortunately, your only option is going to be to manually upload those files (or however many of them you can find) to the new site. (Keep in mind that if you don’t give them the exact same names on the new site, they won’t show up in the posts/pages properly. Yes, it’s going to be time-consuming.)

Great, thanks for the info! I haven’t contacted my old host, but I can. Thanks for the idea. I have a feeling it’s going to come to me doing this the long and hard way, but I appreciate having a confirmation first!
