Error in setting featured image. Occurs in both Firefox and Edge
-
When I try to set a featured image I get this error message: ‘The featured image should have a size of at least 1200 by 675 pixels.’
I have tried several images from my media library, including ones that were sccessfully used last week. This is your new block editor. It was working now it isn’t.

My site is
https://thecheesesellerswife.wordpress.com/
and I’ve had problems with all the new posts I’ve made over the last week or so. I have had to hunt around to find an image that works for the posts.
Some images that I’ve used before give the error I’ve described. One example is the post
where I could insert the photo of my gandad into the post. but not ser it as a featured image — although that image was acceptable as a featured image before the change in editor.

Hm, it’s a pretty old theme. As its name implies, Twenty Thirteen came out in 2013, but it was last updated August 11 of this year, so that shouldn’t be a problem.
Are you using the new Block Editor https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/ or the Classic Editor under the Dashboard at /wp-admin/?
-
Some of us keep the theme we started with because its part of our look. :)
I’m using the new block editor. Don’t like it, can’t see why it’s needed unless you have a photo blog, but as an IT professional I tend to try to adopt the new stuff even if it’s a struggle.
After all the classic editor will go someday……

Ok, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.
-
Yes, I switched browser already, from Firefox to Edge — the problem was still there.
I have just re-checked on Edge, the problem is still there, even after clearing cache and cookies and Edge tells me that my version is up to date –Version 85.0.564.44 (Official build) (64-bit). I have not installed any browser extensions or add-ons.

It’s odd, because I’m just not running into this problem.
Here are the steps I took: https://d.pr/i/BRzI7J
I used an 8000 x 4000 image.
And, thought it takes a while to load, it works: https://d.pr/i/iqckqE
Are you following a different path than I did?
If you’d like to try the same image, it’s the Hi-Res PNG from https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2018/04/Gaia_s_sky_in_colour2

I’m clicking on ‘set featured image’ as you also appear to be doing.
The difference is that I’m selecting from my own media library, a collection of photos that I choose from to head up my blog posts. Each one has previously been used as a featured image but several of them now cannot be so used.
For example a photo of my Grandfather was once used as a featured image on this post
https://thecheesesellerswife.wordpress.com/?s=coalBut can no longer be used as a featured image on the post below
Some of them can be used, as in this recent post:
It’s weird…………….
-
The first thing I noticed is the prompt in the featured image on that post says, “The featured image should have a size of at least 1200 by 675 pixels.”
And it’s right. The picture that is currently the featured image is 764 x 573 pixels: https://d.pr/i/DeX3x4
I then checked the image of your Grandfather and it’s small as well at 500 x 485 pixels.
My next question is if you ignore the error about the featured image size and Update or Publish anyway, does it work and correctly use the image that you set as featured?
-
No, it does not set the image as the featured image.
But this used to work, there was never any restriction on what image you used for a featured image.
-
I created a draft post on your site – you’ll see it under drafts – and was able to set your photo of your grandfather as a featured image there. It shows the notice, but the image is correctly set.
I also tried this on a test site of mine, with an even smaller image, and the post published correctly with the featured image, in spite of that notice appearing in the editor. So this should work.
Just to confirm, do you actually see the featured image in the editor after setting it, as it currently appears in the draft post I made on your site, or does the featured image remain blank for you after you click “Insert”?
